Anyone know what the wiring is for that plugs into the back of the "pocket" under radio?

There's a copper busbar back there on the SA's.

Been many years since I took mine off but I think it provides for an interconnect or pass-through for power (or something; illumination?) for the stock stereo arrangement when you DON'T have the optional tape player.

I'll see if I can dredge up the details for you, but mine's been out for 15 years or so.

Looks like the pocket comes the same from 79-83 based on mazda trix, where I bought mine. My original was broken. If it's something for the original radio I wont worry about then.

My '82 GSL definitely has the plug, and was plugged into the original.

Car came with an aftermarket when I got it. I was thinking about relocating the window/wiper/cruise switches the the pocket, and using the miata cup holder.

I just couldn't find in the schematics where it went!

I've never been able to spot it on the wiring diagrams - - it doesn't show up on the connector list at all, though it should.

It does appear in the parts manuals (sect 6680A), though. But the description of "Terminal, Plate" is no help.

It's for the original radio equalizer. No big deal. I took out mine and got the pocket to clean up look.

actually, I believe it is for the optional CASSETTE deck. At least in 79-80 RX7s...
Not sure why they went to the trouble of creating a socket in the storage cubby to plug it into. Certainly are other open connectors back there left hanging (like the power mirror harness).

Hmmm. ^^ I know 100 % its for radio equalizer on a 83 GSL. Bought my car totally stock. Must be diffferent for the SA models.

I believe the harness connector is used for either a factory tape player or equalizer (depending on yr and model). An aftermarket stereo probablly would not need this but on both my 79 & 80 OEM stock radio only setups, my harness needs to be plugged in to the pocket bin or I have no power for the radio to work.

huh. I guess there is an interconnect loop-thru within the dummy plug that connects power within the radio harness then? Nice catch Banzai...

yah - no equalizer in the SA models, and the optional cassette fit the cubby compartment so...

In my 1982 Wiring Diagram, it's connector G-03 STEREO . Note that it's a six pin connector where three aren't used.

That's what I was saying originally; the 'dummy plug' is a busbar; a conductive point that connects multiple pins in common.

But I couldn't recall which connector went on it.

Turns out based what you guys are saying, to be the same one I tap my audio power off of!
