78 RX7 rare?

Hi,
I'm being offered a 78 RX7
the title says 78 and the tag on the door says 78
it only has one side view mirror.
Has a 12A just recently rebuilt and ported (2 weeks ago)
with new apex seals, bearings etc (showed me reciepts)
modified stock LIM with a Holley 600
and a flowmaster duel muffler(no headers)

It was originaly gold(I think) and now its maroon (needs repaint) with black interior (or painted black)
looks decent
body is pretty straight except for a long rust line under the right side tail light
and the dash is cracked up

It does have A/C! lol
I took it for a drive and it rides good

oh he'll throw in a set off new Mccreary 13" rear tires the (Fat ones)
a Holley blue fuel pump and regulator he has yet to install

are 78's rare?
I can pick it up for $1,200
what ya think?

Built in 78, prolly sold as a 79. First year, SA. Unless its first off the line I dont think its exceptionally valueable/rare for its date of mfg. Now the ported engine, and Holley setup makes this attractive for the price, depending on who built the engine. Cool, another O-Towner her in the 1st gen section!

Which side is the hood prop on?

My 79 has a build date of 11/78

Pics would help us price it better.

my hood prop is on the passenger's side (right hand side) build date of xx/78

I think if I recall correctly, my car is number 549x off the line.... but it's in crappy shape, so it's not worth much

Gamble determind the year of my car and was blown away. He figured that mine was a Jap model so perhaps the vin digits meant different things.

Not sure about this but most cars built in Sep are sold as next year's car.

They can be built well before Sep of the previous year, especially if it is a new model. My '93 was built in March of '92.

I've never heard of North American RX-7's being sold as 78's (eventhough most 79's where probably built in '78). The year of introduction was 1979.

The only exception to that rule that I can think of would be:
#1 An imported car from Japan. My Savanna is titled as a 78 and was sold as a 78 in Japan (but then the car would have RHD).
#2 Maybe it's a pre-production LHD model that was used for magazine testing or something. Maybe it was imported in the US early enough to make it a 78.
#3 Someone screwed up at the DMV... which is the most likely scenario.

I think it was a early show room model
and that is why it is a 78'

That seems the most logical explaination to me

I have a TII
thats heavily modified
and knowing me
I'll buy this 1st gen and start to make it turbo

I really don't want another money pit
so I may not end up buying it

If the car is serial numbered as a 500001+ its a north american car. RX7 production started in March 78, with US sales starting in April 78 but cars were sold as 79 models. All japanese home-market SA22C cars started with serial number 100001. The first run or so of US spec cars had the hood support arm on the passenger side a la japan market. Likewise no pockets in door panels.
