4x4 Rx-7

Was there ever a 4WD or AWD Rx-7? I think I read about a rally version somewhere.

A custom all-wheel drive one, yes. I believe it was an SA, 1978-79.

I wanna know how they did it. It'd be cool to replicate it.

They did it with the almost bottomless budget of a factory-sponsored rally team Had rack & pinion steering, too, I think.

Ok, I want to do that. It would be awesome! There's gotta be something out there that comes close. I wonder if a Subaru system could be fitted into the FB or SA.

An older Audi Quattro system would probably be less expensive, believe it or not...

Not the best application for a rotary. For 4x4ing, mudding, and rally car driving I'd want more torque, and I'd be willing to sacrifice the lighweight power of a rotary to achieve that.

dont forget that with a newer subaru system there are a lot of sensors and what not that have to be transfered across. Might be a very hard job.

For street it'd be cool though... especially an older Quattro system, as that uses Gleason TorSen diffs to mechanically split traction - no sensors to wire, just bolt'n'go

I saw an AWD 2nd Gen RX-7 somewhere.... it had a large cut-out in the hood for the radiator, the radiator layed flat over the drivetrain..... hmmm where did I see that?

or did I dream it?

AWD would be cool, but expensive as hell to install.

If I'm not mistaken, that factory 1st gen rally car you're talking about used 626 front suspension and driveline parts. Although it's be bloody expensive, it would be really awesome to have a 4wd 1st gen, or any 7 for that matter.

Rod Millen custom built a factory backed 4WD tube framed RX-7 in 1983 for SCCA ProRally, like 357 says using 626 front wheel drive suspension and drivetrain and a Weismann power assist and a 13B PP.
Mr. Millen built another improved 4WD RX-7 in 1984 and campaigned it for a couple of years. In 1986 he built a second genner with 4WD for rallying which he also later converted to turbocharging and running on alcohol to compete at the annual Pike Peak HillClimb until 1988.

I'll ditto that. I took my Dads 85 GSL semi-off-road. It sure handled sweet, and makes for some nice drifting. Its what makes me want to make a rally RX-7.
