4wd Rx7

The other day I was reading about a guy that converted his rx7 rally car to 4WD. Anyone have the slightest clue how he did this? I don't really think I would/could do it, I'm just interested in how he did it. Thanks

Jesse

Rod Millen's AWD RX-7 rally car

In the eighties, Rod Millen made an AWD first gen by adding the FWD components from, what I believe was a 626 Mazda.

Nice. I really like that yellow IMSA racer. Looks cool as hell. Where did you get the article from anyway?

Yeah, I have the brochure too. If he added the FWD components, then what kind of transmission did he use? Oh well, I guess if it was simple enough to be explained on a message board there'd be alot more of them out there.

There's a little more info on it in the Sports car color History book on the RX-7. He did use stuff out of a 626 and I think he had a custom transfer case made for it.

Custom transfer case? I think that's beyond the ability of anyone on this forum. I got an idea, I'll just weld some sprockets(Like the gears on a bike) on the back axle and front wheels and run a chain, that should work. LOL

Can't use big tires, the sprockets would be too big and Need to much chain for the 4wd.

I'm sure someone sometime in their life will do that. Theres lots of crazy people in this world.
I can make the car into a dragster instead of having the car do what its doing....being pottery for our tree in front.

Stupid Question?

Hey,

Sorry if this is blatantly stupid, I don't really have experience working on cars.

Would it be possible to use a transfer case off some other awd car (subaru, audi quattro). Or if you're looking for pure 4wd (4wd and awd is different) then you can take one off a truck or something like that??

Hehe, Project Car: FB with 4wd parts off a donor Subaru Brat or something. How difficult would that be to do? And more importantly, how would it run in the autocross or rally?

Again, sorry if this is blatantly stupid.

Will.
