2nd gen tranny in a GSL-SE

What do you need to do to replace your tranny with a 2nd gen transmission? Please give me the exact procedure. Thanks. I have a 1985 GSL-SE. I will need a tranny soon and have access to a 2nd gen tranny. What will be the difference between a non turbo tranny and a turbo tranny. How will this affect the performance of my car. Keep in mind, my 13b engine is a recent rebuild, no carb but stock fuel injection system(engine is less than a year old). Like I said, I have access to both these trannies.

All you have to do is swap tail housings & shifters.

Edit: really, that's the exact procedure.

Check the sticky page 1st Gen FAQ. My own writeup and Setzep's cover all the details.

They're not talking about turbo transmissions. You don't have to do any cutting or welding or anything to put an NA FC tranny in a FB.

I did a search found a writeup about putting an entire turbo II motor and trans into an FB but I'm looking to just put the trans in because mine is grinding like bitch when shifting into 2nd and 3rd. Is a 2nd gen NA trans a direct bolt in? Will I need a different size driveshaft or trans mounts? If it's a direct bolt in (hopefully) then all of the worries in my life will be solved.

I assume the tailhousing is a different lenght on the 2nd gen trans and I need to change it with the one currently on my car so I can use the same driveshaft? When you say change the shifter do you mean I have to drop the one from my current trans into it, why's that, is the 2nd gen shifter much longer/shorter? Any help is appreciated.

Actually I think the tail housings might be interchangable. Don't quote me on that. You can see for yourself, since you'll have to take them off to get the shift-rods out.

The shifter is externally mounted and bolted to the top of the tail housing. You'll want the whole shifter housing and shifter from the first gen tranny as well as the first gen shifting rod. I think it's six 10mm bolts to swap them over. Real easy.
