2nd Gear is Blown

Im guessing my syncro for 2nd is blown, cause it thumps clangs and bangs into it, and grinds when downshifiting, or if you accelerate hard outa 1st, and try to bang it into 2nd it grinds, and won't go in.

It's only 2nd gear, every other gear is fine, and there's plenty of clutch.

So im swapping another tranny into it, when I buy one. How hard is this? just a matter of unbolting the old, and slapping in the used? Can it be done in my driveway with the car on blocks?

Also, what do you think cause the syncro to die. It was like this ever since I bought the car, so the previous owner did it.

+1^ The only obstacle I encountered with dropping the transmission in my 85 GS was the heat shield. I ended up taking an air chisel to a couple spots because the bolts were rusted on. I have been driving around with the very front shield section removed without any problems because I wasn't able to put it back on with supplies on hand. Otherwise it's fairly simple for two people to do in a day.
