Try balsa wood instead of PVC for bracing.

Balsa is extremely strong for its weight. Take for example that a length of balsa that weighs 14 Lbs./ Cu. Ft. would weigh less than one third of a length of oak the same size and you would get almost 1.3x the resistance to bending of oak given a constant weight.

I wouldn't use PVC for reinforcement because its heavy and quite flexible.

They use balsa in the floor of the current corvette, so I suppose it's possible. perhaps steamed and bent 1 x 1 strips (so it doesn't try to 'spring back', thereby distorting the hood)

Balsa is used in tons of cf applications!! There are even some fighter planes that use it as their cores in certain parts. Carbon is hightly conductive with electricity and balsa insulates nice, and is very rigid and strong in a core.

Not sure?? If I change to anything else, It would be the Kledgocell foam...this stuff is awsome....easy to shape and once resin hits it, it turns to a rock and is probably the lightest material out there......some what expensive though.

There are a few good sites to look at! It would take way too much typing to explain it all. Through these sites you can get some very good info!

Hope your project works out for you

i think i got a solution for you 1st7heaven. have people send you their hood latch, as a "core" then add it to their hood. That way people can have a full bolt on/latching hood, and those who dont have the latch can use hood pins.

just a suggestion

I'm making metal components for my CF/fibreglass hoods to support the hinges, latch, and prop rod.

BTW you did notice this thread was like 2 years old, yes?

you know that looks good.. to ship a crate the size of a rx7 hood from one coast to the other is right around $ 80.00 via fedex ground. something to chew on..... if you through a casting of the sub-structure under side using 2 layers of cloth and resin
then bond the top and bottom together using resin will allow for a latch/pin . i designed a 'drop-in' latch/pin box out of aluminum that rivits in. strips of aluminum
say 16 guage running the lenght of the hood add support, are thin , and nuts can be mig/tig welded to the aluminum strips for hinge mounting. drop me a line if your interested in the latch/pin design..
