254,000 miles and still going!!!

Hi everyone! my first post in the 1st gen section but I thought you might appreciate this! Here it goes...

So I was at the smog station today and pulled up to an 85 GXL in the bay next to me. It was a lady owner about mid 40's or so. I commented her very nice condition 7. I mentioned I owned a 3rd Gen and we got to talking. When I mentioned the only downfall about the rotaries were having short lived lives, she looked at me in disbelief and said "are you kidding?" My engine has over 254,000 miles on it and still going strong! The only thing I've replaced (other than normal wearing parts) was the Tranny! I was listening to the engine running at the station and it sounded cleaner than any other high mileage rotary I've ever heard before.
I wish our 3rd Gen's had stories like this! Dan

You mean GSL-SE. These motors are pretty reliable, 3mm apex seals! Mine has a little over 200K, the last 20K or so turbo.

Crap! lol It shows how much I know about 1st Gens. Anyways I had no idea this was heard of. Our 3rd gens don't last for crap. I figuered all rotaries were short lived with or with out boost.

i got 176,000k right now, it had ben sitting for a while i got it drove it 60 or so mile and it ran very strong.

My 83GS has 125k, sounds sweet, accelerates like new, and I expect that I'll give out before it does. I've got 4 rotaries and don't expect to replace an engine in my lifetime, even in the 31 yr old REPU. I add 8-10 oz. of 2-cycle oil or MMO to every tank of gas and I watch the temp gauge carefully. Sometimes I replace cooling system parts like heater hoses just to be safe. I've put in 3 radiators in the past 3 years, just to be safe; they're cheap enough at $110 from radiators.com.

The 13B in the GSL-SE has a reputation for lasting well over 200k, so I would guess that the FCs should do well with just a little attention.

SE's are awesome for reliability.
Partly because they make the least HP of the EFI 13B's(less stress),
but also since the SE was the most expensive,top of the line RX-7 of its time,many are still in the hands of the original owners or enthusiasts, who take very good care of them.The majority of the SE's I see around here still look new,with original paint and near stock appearance.S and GS models tend to be trashed or neglected.
