2-cycle oil in fuel, will it hurt?

I've heard some guys in my local club that putting 2-cycle oil in with the fuel every time you fill up. I was thinking about doing this, but was wondering if it would help or hurt an engine ('85, 12A) with 119,000 mi. on it.

Also, this friday I plan on purchasing new ignition coils from Victoria British (they're in their catalog), has anyone here used these before, are they any good?

Thanks

I had an old teacher that raced rx-7's and he put 2 cycle oil in the tank. I've done it with an '84 SE 180k+ miles and didn't notice any difference in performance, but the extra oil couldn't hurt.

hmm

ive heard of disconnecting your metering pump and just premixing your oil every fillup. I dunno know if it works out right. Anyone do this?

Wouldn't that only lubricate the apex seals, and not lubricate and cool the rest of the engine? Or am I being ignorant of the exact duties of the metering pump?

the oil metering pump only distributes oil to the carb or apex seals , everything else is internally lubricated.

peace

Instead of using dirty oil from the rest of the system, which most likely doens't mix that well, you have the 2 stroke oil in the gas tank which is well blended with the gasoline to provide superior lubrication to the seals. Also whne was the last time you pulled your OMP and check that it was metering at the correct rate? I cracked one of the lines a bit when I was re installing my carb, so instead of buying new ones and worrying about te OMP metering correctly I began premixing. I like it, and it's not that hard to do. Plus the look on people faces when you pull out the bottle of oil is priceless.

How much do you use per tank, or do you figure it by the gallon, Do you use the measurements on the bottle?

1/2 quart per fill up, or 1oz per gallon

My friend used to premix for use in his GT3 class RX3. I think he used Bel-Ray synthetic 2-stroke oil, either MC3 or MC5, can't remember which.

Just do a search for my post in a thread about how to measure to see if your OMP is metering the correct amount if you're interested. I also put in the same thread about premixing synthetic and mineral based oils and how much too.

Do you have to check your OMP to use the 2-cycle oil, or can I just start when I next fill up?

Just do it on your next fillup. My OMP still works but I premix for a little extra insurance. BTW, I buy my 2-stroke oil by the gallon at Walmart. It's real cheap that way.

ive heard of guys who put a little bit of 2-cycle oil in their tanks for racing because, rumor has it, it actually lowers the octane of the gas, and as most of you racers probably know, rotaries run better on lower octane gas. i forget the exact reason.... its something like, with the lower octane gas (which burns a little slower), it actually burns in a streak as the rotor is moving. so the 2-cycle is rumored to help a little bit... doesnt mean to go puttin an extreme amount in there tho.

Lots of the 2nd Gen guys do it. There are also kits available to have your original OMP pump 2 cycle oil into your engine instead of it pumping regular 20w-50 or what ever you use.

I am pretty sure the octane drop is very marginal at best. I never had any detonation in my bridgeport, except when I advanced the timing too far.

Their is a claim somewhere saying carbon seals apex seals, which I have in a bridgeport engine I use as my daily driver , will last 30,000miles with hard driving even if used with 2-cycle oil. I have to agree with that claim because I have abused the hell out of this engine and taken the engine apart for a couple times for non-apex seal problems since I used them. I checked the thickness with a micrometer each time and showed less then 1/2mm of missing materal from each after 11,000miles. With at least 3mm or more of apex to go through before a failure would occur from being worn down too far.

So I would think steel seals would also benfit GREATLY from 2cycle for longevity. Along with the side seals and corner seals getting the lube advantage from being well mixed into the gas.

Okay, let me get this straight, are you talking about pre-mixing AND running the metering oil pump at the same time? Because if you are looking for the performance advantage of running 2-stroke oil to lube the apex seals, using the metering oil pump becomes totally unnecessary. In fact most people who run pre-mix just remove the metering oil pump and cap off the hole. You get much more control pre-mixing as well.

On my '85, I put in 16 oz. It's great! No smoke at all.

yes, it is very marginal.... but when your road racing your constantly trying to pic up every little bit of hp and performance. the point is that it definately will not hurt the car.

In the RXX-7, I have to use pre-mix, since I don't have a spare output from the Tec IIs for driving the OMP. I use 25 ml of 2-stroke oil per gallon of gasoline.

Important: Use only TCW3-rated oil. That means that it burns ashless.

If you still have a functioning OMP, you really don't need as much oil as I'm using. Pettit sells (or used to sell) an additive for the gasoline which was basically TCW3-rated oil. Recommended usage was 4 oz per gas tank.

Hope that helps.
