Angry 2.5 Inch Exhaust not fit?

I just bought a 1980 12A RX-7 and I went to an exhaust place coz I want it to sound sweet (and perform better... I guess ) It has a 2.5 inch setup coming off the engine, but half way down the length of the car it is downsized to something around 2 inches. The exhaust salesman said it was probably because it wouldn't fit around the diff at the back, and I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem, or knows of a way to get around it.

Re: 2.5 Inch Exhaust not fit?

It's probably mixed with the stock exhaust. I have a full 3" under the car and OVER the rear axle, and it fits fine, so I know you can get what you want.

fits great on my 84 GSL-SE.. I think that the guy was smoking something, or was just really shitty on a bender, if he can't do the 2.5. I'd look at it, then if you know you have the room, take it back and tell him to fix it. Get angry, it works. hope that helps man. Btw, I have 2.5 all the way back.

Yep.. I have a full 2.5" from the header back. A little too loud for my tastes, but it's much better than it used to be.

2.5" here too from header back, and it goes up and over the axle easily.

It's also a good idea to make sure the "over the diff" section is mandrel bent as it's pretty tight.

The only clearance issue someone could have probably would be over the axle but right where the passenger side watts link is,not too much room there, right where that first bend upwards is.

I paid for an RB header and brought it to the muffler shop. I had my own muffler (straight through 2.5 <--> 2.5 inch dynomax) and they charged me 200 to weld it all up. It's 2.5 inch piping from the header to the muffler.

When you get it over the axle make sure it's real tight to the top of the car. I had to take mine back a few times becuase my axle was rubbing against the bottom of the exhaust that was going over the axle.

The muffler shop I went to fixed everything both times I came back and didn't give me any problems and it was all free and they were polite.

So you can get 2.5 all the way back and make sure it's at a decent shop.

That's the 2nd old thread he's dug up in as many days. Well, at least they're searching and reading, we've been bitching about the lack of that for some time.

Check the date stamps on threads/posts to make sure you're not bringing up an old post from the dead.

This is true but we want them to search for this type of thread when they have a specific related question to the thread. I can't understand why it would be brought up to answer a 4 year old question?

At least in the other thread he brought back he did have a specific question and added information to the thread. I give him Club cookies for that.

I was doing some exhaust recently and just wanted to add a little something to the thread, didn't realize it was old...what does it matter anyway, exhaust info or anything else for the matter isn't really time sensitive anyway(still relative).

Go with 4 inch. If some is good, more is better, right?

Screw exhaust. Get a flange and cut a hole in your hood, route the exhaust UP.

You will love the flames.
