I got excited the first time I saw one on a 7. Then I found out it didn't do anything but look good. Oh well.
I think I remember seeing a true Targa 7 years ago in Rotary Rocket with a Ferrari hatch conversion on the rear.
SWEET!!!!
Does any one have a pic of the hatch conversion piece? Mariah may have sold it. I know Rotary Engineering sold it.

Hey NOTA V6; why did you give the "I'm with stupid"smily? Technically we don't need door panels, head liners and all that stuff, but we have them. They don't make the car go faster, but I'm not about to run around in a gutted car. Is that "rice"? Rice is anything that is put on just for looks and not for performance. If no one had rice, our cars would suck. They would all be flat black and look the same. I know this is getting extremely hypothetical and is delving into the exact definition of "rice" but whatever. wow I must be really bored right now to be typing this.

Because I agreed with you. I stated that my car has some rice tendancies, but I will not add rice at the cost of performance.
BTW, you may not need carpet or passenger seats, but anyone who ever needs to haul their wife around will tell you that they are not rice. Try taking a road trip to the MRR with your wife in the car with no radio, sound insulation, or AC in 102° weather, and tell me they are not absolutely necessary.
But I agree that a certain degree of rice is in all cars that are street driven. And there is a difference IMHO between style and rice. Paint serves a function, and therefore might as well be personalized. A box that makes "psssss" BOV sounds is not required in any shape or form...

Yea, I agree with the rice/style thing you said. I mean we could start splitting hairs over what rice is and isn't. I couldn't do without carpet etc either. And as for seats. I'm seriously considering putting a back seat in. I never carry anything (other than my 10" sub) in the trunk anyway. Ha do you know what my avatar is from? Anyone? It's sort of a cult thing. try to guess, someone will know. I want to see who can get it. Later

I guess somewhere back in the 80's mazda coined the name Targa for that ugly piece of tin they were wrapping on our RX7s in order to give the car an exotic porsche like look. BUT, I tell you this, that fad has long died and the only reason I could ever see the Targa on my car would be to RESTORE it to the "T". Same goes for that aluminum siding on some of the RX7s. It is sooo over. It's like those 3' spoilers stolen from the Supra 2 years back and the aluminum wings stolen straight off race cars last year. It's too datable and only makes the car look old or out of style like a brown suit.

There are two different styles of Targa bands that I'm aware of. The dealer-installed one-piece unit like on my '80, and the "Targa 7" three-piece unit which is more common. The one-piece unit is attached with adhesive, while the Targa 7 is attached with sheetmetal screws.
I think both have their own distinct look, more retro than rice, actually. The one piece unit is super-rare, I've only ever seen one other, on a green '80.
You know, the Porsche 911T was designed to have the center section of the roof removed, but our RX7s were not. The roof is a stressed member which provides structural rigidity, that's why racers want non-sunroof cars and also why I wouldn't opt for a targa-like conversion, myself. Just my opinion, don't ask me for any numbers, charts or graphs...

i am thinking about turning my "TARGA 7" into a real targa...i have made some drawings of the suport peices im going to make and i have a few concept sketches...i dont think it would be too too expensive.
the dealerships in winnipeg used to do it for customers.
if you want to look at my drawings e-mail me at leif_e_larsen@hotmail.com and ill see about sending them out to you.
