1st Gen RX-7 article in Car&Driver!

http://caranddriver.com/xp/Caranddri...?keywords=rx-7

Maybe it has been posted a million times, but there is no search right now so deal with it.

It's long but interesting.

"We give three editors $1000 apiece so that each may contestin his own low-compression heapour first-annual Special Olympics of Rust. One beater wins. The other two suffer general corruption and bad juju."

They said "bad juju"!

Sorry, it's been one of those days at work for me....

"Smith's Camaro we dubbed Uncle Buck. Markus's Rabbit somehow took on the nickname Tricia Nixon. And Berg's RX-7 acquired the happy-go-lucky moniker That Total Shitbox in the Parking Lot."

"My car, said Berg of his Mazda, doesnt so much have brakes as what Id prefer you called delayers or perhaps hesitators"

This is GOOD stuff!!!!

OFF-ROADABILITY
The off-road capability of beaters is, in a reductionist construct, key to judging their long-term value. This is because the owners of beaters often subject their vehi- cles to unscheduled field exercises following, for instance, intense stock-offering negotiations at the Dam Site Inn during free-pitcher night.

MOST LIKELY TO LEAK
Although the Camaro ruptured a heater hose during its acceleration measurements, thereby later placing a literal spin on the term skidpad, the RX-7 easily out-hem- orrhaged it. At the conclusion of its top-speed run, the Mazda was leaking radiator coolant, Mobil 1 oil, transmission fluid, clutch fluid, windshield-washer solvent, Bergs personal cache of Diet Pepsi, and more than a few Kamel Red butts. Later, it would leak most of a swamp, plus a bottle of flat-black touch-up paint that was crushed by the combination spare tire/Mikuni carb that Berg had inscrutably insisted be carried untethered in any manner at all times under the hatchback.

Come on Mike; you gotta admit some of that was real funny. In a few years they can do it with the second gen.

LOL! That was a great article. At the time I it came out I was driving a $500 175,000 mile rusted-out '84 Supra that could've kicked all those other car's butts in all tested categories. I wanted them to re-do the contest so bad so i could show up and waste 'em.
My car was unique in that I had to fabricate an angle-iron brace to keep the passenger side of the unibody attached to the floor, the hatch and sunroof were sealed shut with silicone, the power door locks I had to disable because the cylinders had been punched out, and it could lay rubber anywhere anytime. My stereo was a tiny battery-powered portable tape deck laying on the passenger seat. Didn't matter at 120 mph... I miss that motor.
