Cool 1st gen engine swap plus doors....??

i just bought the Rx7 that i have always wanted but....... the engine 12a doesnt work..... but i have a 2nd gen fuel injection....... both cars are 5 speeds...... i want to swap the 13b engine from my non-turbo 2nd gen into my 1st gen that i just bought today...... can i just pull the motor out from my 2nd gen with factory ecu and bolt it up?????? what do i need to complete this task??? i want to use my 2nd gens motor because it was recently rebuilt. the 13b motor has no smog equipment or aircondition stuff on it. do i need a different flywheel and clutch??? also .......... the car i bought is a 1st gen 1983 gsl model...... it has power windows in great condition....... does anybody want to trade me some regular window crank doors complete..... i will do a straight trade for my electronic windows/doors with key..... i dont like electronic roll down windows......
do i need anything from the 12a engine when i do the 13b swap????

Yeah I hate to say it becuz I hate to hear it but search like "13b swap".... i say this only becuz there are tons of threads about it.

Im doin same swap so heres a quick list and idea:
you need:
gslse - oil pan & pickup tube, front cover
you need to modify the 2nd gen wires

also:
fuel pump/ regulator
gas tank
hard fuel lines
exhaust

The 13b bolts right up to ur tranny including the flywheel and stuff

thats a general idea depending on your specific application you

Good Luck

Search bitch!!! j/k

Its really not that hard to swap a 2nd gen non turbo to a 1st gen. The easiest way is to swap out the FI system to carb. BUT... the 2nd gen ECU is not all that hard to wire up to a 1st gen. I couldn't tell yah right now cause I'm pretty drunk, but if you search a little, you;ll probably find what yah want. I know I posted up before what wires to connect to where to swap that in. Also, the wiring for the TII swaps is basically the same IIRC.

Exclamation

i did search..... i end up with my thread and the post for the 13bTII swap.... but i want to know which parts i can use that are on the 1st gen... like is the 1st gens tranny gonna bolt on directly to the 13b without any mods??? i know i have the change the front cover.... that can be done considering i have the stock 12a motor from the 1st gen. can i use the 1st gens radiator or do i have to use the one from the 2nd gen??? do i reuse the oil pan that is on the 12a engine and put it on the 13b? is there any modifications i have to do, to the 1st gens front cover to work with the 13b??? i plan on using the stock 2nd gen coils, i am trying to reuse any and all parts as much as possible.

you mentioned gas tank and fuel pump........ can i use the gas tank and fuel pump from the 1st gen??? or do i just need a better pump? i know it will be fuel injected... so can i use the stock pump and use an inline pump as well to pump the required fuel psi???..... damn i just got this car today and all i know is that the 12a motor doesnt work.

The 1st gen 12A front cover will bolt right up to the 2nd gen engine. You'll need a 1st gen 13B oil pan, and the stock 1st gen tranny will bolt right up to the 2nd gen engine. The 2nd gen coils are a little bit of a problem. You can't use te 2nd gen trailing coils. You need a computer to trigger them. But as for the leading, if you do a search for dlidfis or somehting like that, can;t remember at this time. Sorry I can't be of more help.

LOL it sounds like u r surprised... haha. Sorry but try to remember how you are feeling right now...desperate, anxious and helpless.... this is what you will be going through a lot as an rx7 owner so get use to it! and welcome mang.

So yeah you need a gsl-se gas tank or you can fab one up but you gotta read the threads on that becuz i have no clue what you fab. GSL-SE tank is easiest.

You need a bigger fuel pump to deliver the correct fuel psi... if i remember right i think it is around 35 psi?

Im just regurgitating info I have been told so dont ask my for specifics but here is my thread, it has a lot of stupid questions and a lot of REALLY good answers about the swap... read this thread and more before asking more questions.
THIS COMES UP WHEN YOU SEARCH LIAR!!!!!!!

ok so i bought a 1st gen... its a gsl 1983...... does that mean that i got the gsl-se??? i dont know much about the gsl gxl gl model stuff.... so i CANNOT use the 12a oil pan that the 1st gen motor has????? but i CAN use the front cover plate..... what specifically do i need to keep on the 12a' front plate for it to function properly on the 13b?? can i use the gas tank from my 86 2nd gen????? can you guide me to a gsl-se ??? which year and what parts do i need??? all i know is that this 1st gen has its original motor 12a it has power windows and cruise control + sunroof. i have no idea what model my 86 rx7 is because the car has had all the emblems and identifying factors shaven off. so i just know its a 5 speed 13b 86 rx7....

12a oil pan will not fit a 13b. Front cover will.
1983 GSL is not a GSL-SE, as the SE was not made until 84. It had a FI 13b.
You need the oil pan from an SE. Fortunately, these are still available new, from Racing Beat and a few other places.

Welcome to the forum.

All of the questions you are asking have been covered many times in this section.

Learning to use the search function takes awhile and may take hours of sifting thru old threads to find what you are looking for. I recommend using the advanced search function to narrow down your work.

The other sections that alot of time have gone into are the Archives and the FAQ sections. Please take some time going thru these as you will find that most of the info you are looking for may be in one or both of them.

As far as your wanting to swap doors to obtain your power windows. It is not needed. You just remove the power window regulators with motors. Put in non-power regulators. You will have to cut a opening in your door panels for the crank handle if you do this and buy some window handles.

Please when requesting parts start a thread in the WTB/Fs parts section of the forum. It will be under the 1st gen section.

I have not done this swap, but it is obvious you do not have to replace your fuel tank. People do fuel injection conversions all the time. What you need is a fuel pump that puts out the correct pressure. The GSL-SE has an external fuel pump that mounts in the same location as the standard 1st gen pump. You need to know if the fuel pressure for the GSL-SE is the same as the 2nd gen cars, but in any case, pumps are readily available that will work, and you can use a regulator if necessary.

If you are smart about wiring, everything else will be easy.

I have a GSL-SE fuel pump if you need one.

wow thanks for the replies.......... you guys mentioned that i will not be able to use my trailing coils???? is that right???? why is that......??? i have the ecu..... actually i have everything for the 13b because its still in my 2nd gen running with only about 3000 miles on it so far. i dont want the 2nd gen anymore....... i just got the 1st gen and its the car i wanted (Rx7). can i still use the CAS or will i need to go distributor??? ok so i need : 1: 1984-85 gas tank from a GSL-SE w/ fuel pump..... 2: i can reuse the 12a's front cover...... what do i need to keep on the front cover??? will the 13b pulleys and stuff fit directly on the 12a front cover?? 3: i need an oil pan from 84-85 rx7 GSL-SE 13b....................... so this pretty much covers all the mods necessary to install the 2nd gen 13b??? with the exception of the wiring of course....... is anybody interested in the 2nd gen????? i will give a great price considering it wont have a motor....... theres gonna be a 12a up for grabs really soon too....... its completely stock with what looks like a new fuel injection carb or something........ about the doors..... i want to do a straight trade for complete doors with keys.

If you go Fuel Injection then YEs you need a GSL-SE gas tank! or you need to fab your current tank!

I have asked the same question before and i am in the process of attaining parts one of which is a gsl-se gas tank.

The reason i believ is the gsl-se has a "slosh" thing or something. You can fab your 12a one but by far the easiest way (i have been told) is to buy a gsl-se one!

Try seperating your ideas and comments/questions so it is easier to read and stop using so many damn question marks.

Yes. Placing posts intended to annoy those who have been trying to assist you, usually does annoy them. Result: they quit trying to assist you.

i have been reading and i found that both racing beat and mazda trix have a front motor mount to place a 13b in a 12a chassis... its states that it will facilitate the process. do i need this mount? or is the one that is already on my 1st gens. chassis all i really need?

The mount that RB/Mazdatrix offers is a suggested part. The stock 12a mount can be "adjusted" to fit. The 13B is longer than the 12A, due to the wider rotors/rotor housings. The GSL-SE had a different front crossmember, but used the same mounting plate as the 12a cars.
