GA 1st Gen choke question

Got the carb rebuilt and car is running pretty good. Question is this, my choke is not working, and wasnt when I bought the car, so it can be a booger to get started for the first time each day. Heres my deal....when I pull the choke **** OUT the cable does not move, the **** does not retract. What I need to know, is this....i know the choke assembly has an electromagnet in it to retract it, but is the cable directly linked to the carb and **** so it should pull open even if the electromagnet is not functioning? I have no problem remembering to push the **** back in if thats the case, just not sure where to start looking to fix.....or exactly what I am FIXING....boils down to, when I pull the **** (at anytime) should the cable move and close the choke????? Or is that electrically controlled???? Thanks

straight cable to the carb, check the cable and make sure it is not broken. electro mag only keeps it in place until warm.

+1... sounds like your choke cable is broken inside the sheath.

The spring on the carb is responsible for retracting the cable; the e-mag in the **** assembly holds it out.
