1985 rx7 sluggish

I just bought my first rx7. i drove it from California to Kansas City without any trouble. I am concerned because the acceleration is very sluggish. My 2002 626 can out perform this car. also, if I drive it for a short distance, ie to the gas station a few blocks away, the car has a hard time restarting if at all. It is fine on longer trips. Do i have to drive it untill the choke pops back in before i can stop? and how do i get more power out of it? since the car sat for 2 years before i bought it i did put a can of Sea Foam gas treatment in it. Any input for a 'Newbie'

You can start off with an upgraded carb and exhaust for performance. It will increase your power quite a bit. Also, most of the time (when I still had stock carb) I would wait until the choke popped off to drive it at all. That was just me though. I still let it sit and warm up quite a bit, though.

I'm an hour north of you in St Joe, PM me for a phone #. If you want to bring it up, I can go over the car with you. You should let the engine warm up before shutting it off, makes restarts easier.

See sig line for additional info, welcome to the forum.

Those that know me personally, depend on my quick wit to keep them entertained.
A couple weeks ago, at one of our weekly get togethers, I asked the waitress for $5 worth of $100 bills. You could hear the trainwreck...............
Then she came back a few minutes later, asking if I wanted $100 worth of $5 bills........
The following week, she was the hostess. We were on the list 1/2 hour before we got there...

Your car might be low on compression. MY GSL-SE with high miles would run great, then all of a sudden it wouldn't start for nothing. The trick get her strated was to take the fuse for the fuel injection out, pull the top spark plugs out, crank for about 10-15 seconds(to clear out the excess gas out), squirt some oil in the spark plug holes, put the plugs and fuse back, and try again. It would always start up. You have to blow it out because there is a ot of oil in their, but the extra oil helps seal it up a little better ie: more compression. On yours, you should a fuse for the fuel pump instead of the injection. I know it sounds like alot, but I got it down to a 5-minute operation. After about five times, I decided to put in a JDM TII instead. Hope this helps.

Nah, I have a 2nd gen and 2nd gen friends too, we help each other out. I'm easy I guess. For me, it is a rotary thing, don't care which one but prefer old school.

Floor it without pumping it, just floor it, then crank it. Once it starts, of course, take foot off the pedal.

Got it home...
i just floored it and once it caught, i reved it for a while then drove it around the blocks a few times to let the alt charge the battery for a while.
i got some great advice to keep me from getting into this mess again. thanks.
now...
i bought this car in Cali and i don't have to do emissions test here in MO, is there any thing i can change to boost the sluggish performance with that in mind?

A late 626s will outperform a RX-7 with the stock 12A. Performance standards have changed in 20 years.

Getting more power out of a 12A is a question of money. You can go from the stock 101hp up to 400hp depending on your budget. The realistic range of options is $300 to $10,000. if it's just poor tune such as a dirty fuel filter the cost of getting back to standard is cheap. However you will still be down on your 626 by a second at least in the 1/4 mile drag.

Stage 1 is adding bolt on modifications, start with a better header and exhaust system, add a performance carb ranging from a modified Nikki to a Weber 48 IDA, plus a few freebies like getting rid of the rats nest. With just bolt-ons you can achieve up to 150hp.

Stage 2 is rebuilding the engine with bigger ports, 'street port' will get you 180hp, bridgeport maybe 240hp, PP up to 300hp. Each step will need other upgrads such as carbs to match potential.

Stage 3 is going turbo. Again various sizes and porting but with every thing in a streetable set-up you can get up to 400hp. May be less depending on local noise and pollution regulations.

These are just the engine mods, in addition with more power you need to match output with the flywheel and clutch specs, wheels, tires, brakes, shocks, fuel system etc.

Either decide your budget and find out the biggest bang for your buck, or decide on your performance and find the cheapest and most reliable route.

In my case I decided on 220rwhp, the engine mods were some 35% of my total budget.

Whatever you decide, put the cost down to entertainment. You never get your money back if you invest in car mods!
