1985 rx7... needs some advice
I own a 1985 rx7 that can't pass smog.. It failed in everything but electrical. But that's not what I'm. Worried about right now. It was $150 and it drive as of now and that's wuts important.
I need a new transmission or I think I do.. The 3rd gear is grinding. I'm a college student and can't afford alot.
I have been searching the web but can't find what I need.
I need a 5sp transmission for my 85
12A Rotary with less miles then mine does(230,000)
And any info on how to get my car to pass smog.
I might not be able to check this site everyday so feel free to email me with info. Please and thank you.

There are several 'smog' threads over in the West RX-7 forum:

Try a 'WTB' listing in the 'classified' section under the 'West' forum. I needed a transmission a couple years ago and found a cheap one there, and also a rebuilt for about $150. There are many auto junkyards in the Bay Area where you can pull the transmission yourself ("Pick 'n Pull") and there used to be a couple that would pull it for you for more money.

you know you want this
just ask around. i know people who have whole cars given to them because people know they are in to them. im sure there are people around that can help you find a good deal. as for emissions, try some denatured alcohol or sea foam in the tank.

for emissions:
full tuneup (plugs, wires, cap, rotor)
make sure your air pump is working
get fresh(er) cats
run a few cans of seafoam through to clean out the engine
dump a few gallons of E85 in your tank before going to the station
make sure your cats are nice and hot when you start the test (they work better hot).

Numbers are more helpful for locking down smog issues.
While a tuneup and other items cant hurt, its basically throwing money at a problem that might be as simple as one item. The cost of a full tuneup can be as much as a new cat and it wont help you pas smog if the cat is the actual problem.
Post up your HC,CO and NoX numbers so we can see where the problem lies.
If you have never done a tuneup,or dont know when the last one was done, then it might not be a bad idea.If your strapped for cash, start with the sparkplugs and airfilter, then go from there as funds allow.

Thank you for all your help. I'm pretty sure it does neeed a tuneup but here is the HC & CO numbers
HC
15 mph 511( max 148)
25 mph 418(123 max)
CO
15 mph 1.56(0.89 max)
25 mph 1.76(0.69 max)
NO
15 mph 248(1191 max)
25 mph 200(2031 max)
So I'm not sure if it just needs a tuneup of a new Cat. But the Motor does have 230,000 miles on it and I put my mind past it that that could also be a problem with it not passing smog.
