I have owned a number of small import cars over the years..a 75 Toyota Celica GT, 1986 MR-2, 1990 Honda CRX-si and once a 1981 Mazda RX-7.. The 81 RX-7 was by far easier to modify and 'enjoy' both on the road and in the garage. I dropped a street ported 13B in the 81 RX-7 and it would crush just about anything I ran into (5.0 stangs, camaro's, z cars).. I sold that car after running it for a few years and always regretted it.
I just bought an 85 GSL RX-7 this weekend so I can 'have fun again'...

Just my two cents....

Two basic 'blocks' available for RX-7's..12A and 13B. The 13B has higher displacement. Street porting is a common method used to enlarge intake and exhaust port timing..It's sorta like a mild cam in a piston engine. You get really nice mid-high range power when coupled with an open exhaust and good intake set-up (I had a Mikuni carb on mine).
Do a search on this forum and you can find a lot more detail on this subject.
They really are fun cars when set up right..All kinds from mild to wild run at Summit Point raceway in Charles Town WV..

We seem to be talking about 2 different cars
1. a 1985 type ubknown for $500
2. a 1988 GXL for $3000

I suggest you go to the second generation forum for answers on the second car.

As it appears you have limited mechanical knowledge perhaps the 88 is a better prospect, but if you want to learn about cars get the 85

The 85 would have the 13B engine which produced 135hp, the 88 came with a slightly improved set-up and producind 146 hp. The 88 was marginally heavier 2525lbs as against 2590lbs, So overall there is little difference in performance.
