1984 GSL-SE Tranny problems.

Those of you who thought this was about transvestites, please go to the appropriate website.

Yesterday, I noticed a rumbling noise in my SE (5 speed) with the car running and in neutral. If I push in the pedal so it engages the throwout bearing the noise is the same so it's not the throwout bearing. If I push the clutch all the way in with it in gear, the noise goes away, so not the pilot bearing. So, I'm thinking it is the first bearing on the input shaft that goes into the clutch disk.

Is it possible to remove the metal front part see below:

Then separate only the front bellhousing?

Then remove the input shaft that goes into the clutch and replace that bearing if that is indeed the problem? The manual has you strip the tranny before you even get to the front part.

Thank you all in advance.

It can be done

Pull the tranny. Remove the clutch fork and remove the cover over the input shaft. After you do this, you see two bearings. The big input shaft one and the countershaft. I removed the snap ring that holds the big input shaft bearing in. I used top of the line circlip removers and it was still a pain.

Using a little wedging, I got the bearing out. It grinds nicely. New bearing should arrive today ($50.00) My Mazdatrix parts should be her soon and we'll find out if my gamble is correct. What was weird is that while I rotated the input shaft, the shaft rotated a bit inside the bearing, WTH? Did the bearing seize so the input shaft spun in the main bearing's part that goes over the input shaft.

I will be less than enthused if I have to remove the tranny again.

The reason I didn't get this one done is I'm having a streetport built and want to use a TII tranny, maybe lightened flywheel and PP and clutch.

I got a quote to rebuild this one and it was $425. Actually not bad but you can buy the kit with new bearings and synchros for $125. I haven't rebuilt a manual tranny in a while and I don't want to waste the time or money.

I also ordered Mazdatrix's pilot bearing remover. We'll see if they say it's as good as they say. When I put this engine in, it took more time and abuse to get the remains of the old pilot bearing out than it took to put in the engine and shut the hood and drive away.

I also bought the pilot bearing installer since I've NEVER worked on a rotary that didn't have a destroyed pilot bearing. There's ways to put it in but I'm afraid I'm bending the front lip the holds the roller bearing in so I'll do it with the tool. I think it was $15. Cheap. especially if a grenaded pilot bearing is what took out my main input shaft bearing.

Done and Done

I replaced the large input shaft bearing, seal and the front cover that the throwout bearing slides on along with gasket.
New clutch, throwout bearing, pilot bearing and pilot bearing seal.

If anyone has never used the Mazdatrix pilot bearing remover, it's worth $100 for one use, it took me a minute to remove the ground down remaining outer shell from the eccentric shaft. I also bought the $6 pilot bearing and seal installer and it was well worth the money.

All I had to do was remove the cover the throwout bearing slides on, remove the snap ring from the input shaft and wedge the big roller bearing out (the one with a clip around it). Install, I used the top part of my floor jack handle up to a point and then used one of my my brass punches to get the new bearing on the shaft. Slight problem, the clip ring around the new bearing wouldn't let the new bearing go on the input shaft far enough to expose the c clip slot so I removed the clip ring, gently pounded the new bearing into place until the slot for the c clip was just useable and put on the c clip. Put the large clip back on the big bearing and checked clearance since I bought a new cover. It fit OK using the eye-crometer. Don't forget the shim that goes between the big bearing and the cover.

Put it together and the grinding is gone.

I also used Mazdatrix's synthetic tranny fluid, we'll see if that makes a difference.

Yes, I know I didn't buy a new pressure plate or rebuild the rest of the tranny. The plan is to finish building my 13b 6 port, and use new parts for that leaving the old stuff as spares.

Sounds smooth so far knock on wood...
