1984 Gsl-se. Should I buy it ?
Ok there is a 1984 GSL-SE selling in my area for 500 even. The problems according to the seller is the whole car has been primered and the passenger door needs to be replaced but rest of body is straight. The engine has 155k on it because it was daily driver and still is. Is this a good deal ? Also how much would a paint job run and the passenger door run me ? Thanks for your help.

if you've got the bucks,,get it. it's gonna cost more money down the line, unless you do your homework first. but you have to DRIVE IT before you buy it. BTW
the SE's aren't all that. i have both.

Thanks for your feedback guys. I am currently trying to get the pics and then will most likely buy it and make it my project for this upcoming summer. This will be my first car and I am glad I have decided on 7's.

I agree that it is worth $500, but what are the next costs coming up and how much are they? Think long term. Get it checked out for $50. That may be 10% of the value of the buy but it will tell you what needs to be replaced now, in the near future, and what is the condition of some major expensive components. The $500 is like a small downpayment of what $ you will have to put into the car for parts and /or service. It is old and most of the components will go sometime in the future.
A good paint job would likely be in the ballpark of $2000 depending on how much body work and extras there are.

171k miles and still going strong! As you can see from the other posts above, the SE is a good deal on a car for that money.
Also stated was the necessity to learn something about EFI systems and know that SE's comprise a smaller percentage of total 1st Gen cars out there - but there are far more SE's still running and getting bought/sold than other models. They were the 'creme-de-la-creme' of the 1st Gen cars, for a reason.
The 84/85SE's have 4-wheel, vented disk brakes, an LSD, the EFI engine, and 35 extra horsepower. This makes for a premium over the stock 12A engined cars, and is marginally heavier.
For the money, the SE is a great buy if you're looking for a good performance car that's cheap to insure, cheap to fix (compared to many), and easy to learn about. There is a big contingent of SE owners on this forum that can help you to diagnose just about anything that can go wrong with your car.
Good luck,
