1984 GSL-SE intermittantly runs after switching key off

I just replaced the stock injection system on my 1984 GSL-SE with a Holley carb conversion kit from Racing Beat. The conversion seems to have gone quite well. I also upgraded the fuel pump and expect that I am over fueling. I have a pressure gauge on the way and expect to resolve those issues following guidelines here as well as those by the carb and kit vendors.

The car started at first attempt after mounting the carb. I started and stopped it a number of times with the key.

On one of these starts, besides some obvious tuning needed to even things out, what is concerning me is that after opening the manual choke, the engine began to climb higher and higher towards 2500 in a smooth arc. When it went over 3000 RPM, I switched off the key. The engine continued to run and accelerate until it was starved of fuel (or just finally decided to stop sparking, I don't know which). I did not touch the accelerator at anytime and confirmed that the accelerator cable was free.

Since this event, I have restarted and stopped the engine without any strange behavior. I am a bit paranoid at the irony. My last project car was a Golf TDI that I spent a year updating and upgrading, only to have an unknown turbo leak cause a runaway diesel condition and blow my engine on my first test drive. So to have something like this happen on a gas car makes my step back a bit.

My question is this. What might cause the engine to INTERMITTENTLY not stop when I turn the key off? I would understand if the key never turned it off. That would probably indicate a backfeed or wiring issue sending power to the main relay.

Is this a known failure mode for a relay? Is there a grounding issue I should look for?

I have stripped off nearly every optional component on this car (A/C, power steering, exhaust do-dads, sensors, etc.) I have taken care to trace and terminate wires, but always something I could have missed.

Thanks a million for the assistance. This has been a valuable forum.

You will need to revisit your wiring. Your modifications will have made your car unique enough that factory service manual may not be of much use for troubleshooting.

How is your fuel pump wired,is there any chance its wiring is backfeeding the ignition feed circuit?

Do you run an electric fan?
They can backfeed if wired incorrectly.

I have the stock fan.

Lol. I suppose I did change the wiring picture a bit. It has been over two years since I even looked at this thing and forgot I had tucked the entire wiring harness over on the passenger's side where it became temporary lodging for a family of mice. At least it was not a rats nest.

I am missing some obvious grounds a shown below. Seems like I should start there.

As far as my fuel pump wiring goes, I have the pump connected to the original pump plug behind the driver's seat. Since I have not run this for very long at a time yet, I don't really know if this arrangement is working. Let me attach the ground, do a fuel pressure test, fix some carb leaks I found and report back.

Thanks for the help. Your responses about an e-fan and pump wiring helped my search the forum better and I found many helpful threads and stumbled upon the missing grounds issue.

13B GSL-SE. Wires needing grounded after EFI delete and carb install. Entire wiring harness has been pulled back to the passenger's side firewall.

13B GSL-SE with Racing Beat 80457 600CFM Holley Carb conversion kit.
