1983 rxy 12a die when put into gear. help please

Bought the car a year ago and everything ran great. Had power and was fun to drive. Filled it up a month later and everything went down hill. It lost all power. I have replaced the distributor, timed it, cleaned the carburetor, and replaced the fuel filter thinking I had gotten bad gas. It now runs perfect when it's in park. But u put it in gear and it dies like it's lost all power. The only way it moves is if u Rev it to 6 grand n drop it into gear. And even then she only gets enough power to do 15. The only reason I no this is because I had to get it home somehow. Everything is stock. I'll take any advise at this point. For those who comment thank you

Sounds like its only running on trailing maybe. Are you sure the leading is getting spark? I know
you timed it but maybe its not working after it warms up (typical ignitor failure mode).

You can easily swap ignitors to see if thats the issue.

Could be a bad coil on leading as well. You can try swapping the wiring on the coils, just make
sure only do swapping one element at a time or you will get all cornfused.

I'll give it a shot tomorrow. I'm gonna hold the plugs up to the block n see if they spark. If they all spark the elements should be fine right? I'm trying to knock 4 things out at once is the only reason I'm asking. I replaced the plugs n wires n distributor cap but there's always the chance of getting a bad one.

Just place the plug on the shock tower a few mm away from a strut bolt. This way you can see it spark as you crank the car.

If you get spark on a leading and trailing blug this tells you the dizzy, coils, and ignitors are good. It does not mean you have the riht plug wire going to the right plug position though.

this sounds a lot more like a fuel blockage to me than ignition related. The idle circuit in the carb will allow the engine to run halfway decent even with clogged fuel jets.

Just curious, is this automatic or manual trans? Your post leads me to believe auto.

Possibly huge vacuum leak, badly clogged exhaust, but really does sound like fuel delivery. Go over your previous steps carefully, make sure wires are on proper plugs and let us know the details

Good luck
