I'm confused: are you saying it cranks (goes round and round) but won't fire?

I am also. How does an engine crank, yet not turn over?

Is it flooded, take out all four plugs, turn over engine several times, dry plugs, brake cleaner does a good job of this, then reinstall and try again.

The engine needs 3 things to run: fuel, compression and spark.

1-FUEL: check carb to see that the accelerator pump squirts fuel into the throat, since that should be enough to make it cough and stumble.

2-COMPRESSION: remove plugs and rotate engine by hand to make sure you get solid swooshes from the plug holes.

3-IGNITIONusually the problem) Make sure there's basic spark by cranking engine while providing a short gap from plug wire to chassis. Clean and dry plugs and make sure they are NGK -whatever- or Autolite 2626.

Okk, this is teh status of my car,
I removed all my plugs as recomended and cranked the engine the 1st rotor housing spat out some gas and then stopped but the second one kept on spitting gas for 10 min of cranking onn and off. and never got dry like the first rotor housing, then i figured I will still try to reinstall the plugs but im getting nothing at all no turning over at all. some coughing occurs but then nothing I have no clue. I think taht i lost all my compression and I have no clue where Im gonna get a Compression reader and see what comes upp but for now I have a dead 83 in my garage not doing ****... Please help if anyone can.

Thank you Max
T.

Sounds like one of the floats in the carb is stuck up and you are simply pumping fuel right in as fast as it comes. My suggestion is to leave plugs in, pull fuse for fuel pump and crank it over. Hold throttle open and it more than likely will start. Most likely also will not run correctly but should clear everything out. Next replace fuel pump fuse and restart. If you are quick enough, you can try to put the fuse back in while its running. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Good luck.

Ok Ive tried disconnecting the Fuel pump directly by disconeccting the wire behind the drivers seat and cranked it for a while and it still spat gas from the second rotor housing which I found wierd. So ive tried that already thanks for your time,
any more advice????

yeah this is what i tried today, is there a secondary wiring for the fuel pump that engages when this becomes disconnected? this is getting sooo dumb, i had the same thing with the first rotor becoming clear, but the cloud kept coming, i have had a racing enthusiast rebuild my carb, and my floats are fine, and stuff i still dont under stand the whole no fuel pump but still a whole hell of alot of fuel.. i gave up after 20 mins..

Sounds like the rear rotor is flooding because of excessive fuel, possibly caused by a sticking float.

You can push start an auto. It just needs to be going pretty fast is all. I have successfully done it at ~10 MPH.

as far as i knew.. automatics wheels dont affect the engine
only the engine can affect the wheels kinda like a limited slip, maybe?

When you say that gas continued to come out of one housing, but stopped coming out of the other, was it coming out as a mist or more like gushing out? If the housing that continued to have gas coming out, was issueing a mist while the other housing had nothing, then it sounds like you have one getting the proper amount of fuel while the other is receiving none at all. Hard to start that way.

yeahhh.. mine was coming out in a full out mist.. but this was with the fuel pump not in.. why would it still be getting this much fuel, after 20 mins of no fuel pump being on.. and cranking it for about 10 seconds every min.. thats the part i didnt get..

yup same here, what im going to try now is to put Transmision oil in the lower spark plug housing hopefully rasing the compression and getting it going...

ok this is what i did, disconnect ur fuel pump, crank it some and go look at the front window in ur carb check the fuel level, i guess the stock carbs can hold alot of gas and it take a while to run all of this out. which is what i did to make sure it was all gone, then i put in mmo, turned it over, it fouled my plugs tho, so it didnt start still, got new plugs go to start it and im purtty sure my starter is now dead seeing all i hear is click... when i turn the key.
