YES IT LOOKS LIKE THAT. WE CAN TRY TO GET A SIDE SHOT. WE THINK SOMETHING IS BLOCKED INSIDE THE CARBURETOR, NOT SURE WHAT YET. WILL KEEP TRYING CARB CLEANER. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND HELP. I HOPE THIS IS INTERESTING TO YOU. THERE'S NOT MUCH MORE WE CAN DO BUT LOOK INTO GETTING A REBUILT CARB AND TRY THAT. YES THERE IS SOME RUST, LoL.

If you think the linkage is binding, PB Blast all of it, then check to see if it is a mechanical and not a corrosion bind. You should be able to move the secondarys by hand, but they will not open with engine running in the driveway, not matter what rpm you hit. They only open under load when driving.

Without the linkage connected you have no power.

Mr. Snakey: what was the power like without it ? It seems that you would have noticed it.

Trochoid:The inside of the carburetor and all around the outside of the carburetor and linkages, springs, etc has been sprayed with Seafoam, could not get PB blaster. I will let it sit for a day or two.

When you secondarys are not working it is slow, but not 55 MPH slow. I drove mine around about six months, not knowing that I was only running off of 2 barrels. I just thought my car was slow. I finally figured out the problem and swaped to mecanical secondarys and haven't had a problem since. I even ran 110 on the interstate with it like that.

I take it that you reached speeds of 110 with the secondaries hooked up.

no with out it just took alot longer, if he can't go over 55 MPH he has bigger problems then the secondarys not opening. I mean don't get me wrong, the car was SLOW, it even got beat by my brothers 1.5 four door civic, but not by much. I didn't feel like anything was the matter it was just slow.

i ahd a similar problem with mine when i got it. i rebuilt the carb and it still seemed slow and seemed to eat gas like a **** so i checked the floats. It ran better and had a little more juice when i realized my secondaries weren't attatched. now it runs like a dream. Check in to a carb rebuild and see if it helps. the kit was only 50 sumpin dollars at global and the floats were 29.95 a pop through my dad's shop. not sure how much they are retail though.....

I sense some exaggeration here. I now these cars pretty well. I could barely get one to do 75mph on a very long straight away with the secondaries disconnected before it topped out.

I am sure you do know alot about these cars, but you really wanna sit here and tell me that a car that will hardly do 55 MPH is a secondary problem. I drove like that for 6 months and never relized it because it wasn't so slow to the point of not being able to keep up with traffic. Granted I did run a 12 sec 1/8 mile. I coverted the secondarys and it was alot faster. 10.3 with a slipping clutch to be exact. I can do 80 easily with out ever opening the secondarys. I am not here to argure or anything, just to state my $0.02 that I think he has a bigger problem then just the secondarys.

Well, I can't verify 110 on primaries alone but I do know I can cruise at least at 90 without touching the secondaries. These cars are still very driveable when the secondaries are disengaged. I had to run with mine disconnected for a few months waiting on a carb rebuild a while back. The car drove fine, and I got excellent gas mileage. But then when you do hook them back up you're like HOLY **** that's a lot of power!!!

Seafoam was applied to the outside and inside of the carburetor and left to sit for a day without starting it up. We then started it and tried it again on the road and there is no change in performance. At this point I am going to try to eliminate the remote possibility of bad compression (get access to tester and test it) even though it sounds to the ear like compression is good. I will report back the results from the test. I don't want to take up everybody's time until we get some more facts. The intial symptom was the car started to die at stop signs and would not idle. It was running good just before that, I had driven it for several weeks after getting it from storage. I adjusted the throttle cable so it would idle, its adjusted as far as it will go. THANK YOU, I will post facts when I get them.

No one ever stated that the whole problem is the secondary linkage. Just listed it as something to check for. I was stating that i have a hard time believing that a 7 reached 110mph without the secondary linkage hooked up.

I've run it up to 125 on unmodded primaries alone. You need some road, but it'll climb that high no problem with .058s in the primary circuit. I imagine with some pedal playing, you can do 110 easily enough with the stock .036 primary jets. These carbs have very good signal to the main circuit. That's why they are so moddable.

So your saying without the secondary linkage hooked up and no way for the secondaries to come into play that a stock motor with no mods at all (meaning bone stock) can reach speeds
as what you have listed?

Well, as long as one shifts at around 4.5-5k tops in each gear, one might be able to accelerate to 5th only on primaries, but then 5k in 5th gear is what, a little over 100-105? something like that.

If you have to adjust the throttle cable as far as it will go, there is someting else wrong in the carb or linkage. Might be time to go back to step one on basic settings and check it step by step to see if you have missed something.

My shift point is at 7500 rpm, minimum.

...and Sterling Modded Nikkis will be avail;able soon.

BTW, when did I not answer your PM? (I assure you, Jeff, it was an oversight on my part if I did not answer yours. )
