1982 gs steering HELP

Soot here's a decent amount of play on the steering wheel and it pulls slightly to the right so I have to hold wheel. Anyone know what I can do to resolve my problem or somewhere to start with?

first thing I would do is replace the idler arm with one from Moog. The bushings in the stock one rots over time and become really loose. After you do that get an alignment.

There are things you can do to the steering rack to tighten it but chances are you will make it worse in the long run.

Excessive center play is classic worn out Steering box. They can be adjusted to a point. Beyond that, time for a rebuilt steering box.

At that point would replacing it be a better bet?

Replace the bushings in the idler arm and then see how much play you have. If it's still bad then replace the steering box, if not maybe adjust or leave as is if it's minor play.

I ended up replacing mine after changing the bushings, which were non existent. It was metal on metal.

That is your idler arm like has already been stated. The bushings are easy to replace, but if you have a header you may want to consider a moog. The bushings don't hold up to the exhaust heat very well.

MOOG or bust!

If you're feeling adventurous and want a like-new driving experience, get all new suspension components for the front end (inner tie rod ends, outer tie rod ends, adjusting rods for the tie rod ends, idler arm, change gear lube in the steering box) and then order the bushing kit from Energy Suspension Parts to top it all off. The car will be like new!
