Search the site and ye shall find!!

I don't have many posts here either. But don't let that fool you. That's only because I've been busy searching and reading this site.

Search for "Compression test" in the 1st gen archives.

There are a few different ways I remember reading about. I've tried #2 listed below. I didn't have much luck. I thought I blew an apex seal and I did the #3 listed below to find out it was not the apex seal.

1. A computer that does compression testing (mazda dealer, most accurate way)

2. You can try to use one the the boinger compression testers (very cheap
compared to the computer tester at mazda) I don't think this is as accurate
though. Not sure it works correctly.

3. If you think your blew an apex seal, pull the fuse for the fuel pump, then take
out one of the spark plugs. Hold the gas pedal down all the way and then try
to start the car. You should hear 3 puffs of equal duration and sound. If one
apex seal is blown, you will only hear 2 puffs and a sloppy sounding piissssssst

Actually, if 1 apex seal is blown you will only hear 1 puff as 1 apex seal helps hold compression on 2 sides of a rotor.
