1980 RX-7 Seen on CG

Hi guys, how goes it? I am selling my '99 Cobra to fund a roadworthy project and I believe I may have found the right one, but price wise, am not sure if it is too much?

I found a 1980 RX-7 on Craigslist for $2500. Upon looking at the car, the exterior doesn't look bad, the only issue is chipped paint on the Right rear quarter and the right fender (dime size) but only slight surface rust on the latter. The windshield appears as if there are dozens of tiny bubbles between it (don't believe it is pits?). The 12a engine is a remanufacture with 30k on it and unknown mileage on the tranny. Taking it for a test drive, doesn't appear bad, although it does bounce (they stated that they will replace the shocks The interior is almost completely thrashed. The carpet was not laid down properly, same with the back, the dash and moldings are torn and cracked and someone had hacked out the radio. No rust on the floor boards. However, if anything redeeming, tires have a decent amount of thread remaining!

Anyone believe this may be a bad buy? The owner stated that that he is firm at $2500. Sorry I do not have any pics, my phone had died but if I go back to check it out, I'll definitely snap a few!

Thanks in advance!

that price seems a little high to me for the condition that you described also I would check for rust behind the rear wheel wells this is real common on these first gens

Eric,

Thanks for the reply. Will definitely do. A shame about the interior. I believe I checked them as well as the undercarriage when I was there and didn't notice anything significant. I attempted to bargain with him but to no avail, haha!

I bought a non-running 80 with great interior and pretty straight body, non-running for $1400. Car was unmolested and complete but as with any old car, pretty much everything needs to be gone through.

Nice find! I believe I am going to stay away from this particular car. As nice as the body looks, it might be too much of a bad deal. Thanks guys!

Yah Uber, walk away! Go the extra $$ and get a solid car, esp interior condition. Bits are getting hard to find. You start getting clean,no stories cars at about $3500-ish. DO check on the rust tho-
-rear fenders as stated - this is a 90% given on any. A question of degree mostly.
-under battery shelf (removable)
-under the rear hatch weatherstrip!
-cover behind rear seats come out: chassis rust known to be there and it can write-off the car.
Really depends on degree based on where you live.
Even my SoCali SA has some rust in rear fender bottoms.
Be patient. Happy hunting
