1980 Auto --->>> 1984 Man swap???

First off I would like to say that i'm knew to the forum, but the 1980 I currently own is my second one. I was 16 when i owned my first and now i'm 27. I couldn't give this car up.

Anyways, my ? is:

Can i swap out a 1980 automatic with a 1984 manual? I read something that the rear ends are different and that the 1980 rear end needed to be swapped out also to do this job.

I found a manual on craigs list for 125 and looked at it today. looked pretty good shape but all there was was just a block transmission. What else do i need. I know the basics, but i would love to have a list of crap so when i go to the parts shop i know what i'm looking for.

Thanks in advance and i look forward to many more posts and threads.

p.s. anyone know if there are any 7 clubs in southern maryland??

Needed Items:

1. Pedals from a 1979 or 1980 (Not sure if 81 to 83 will work)
2. Flywheel from pre 1984
3. Starter
4. Driveshaft from 79 to 83 (I could be wrong on this one)
5. Clutch Master & Slave cylinders

Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Welcome, need a manual, they are online in the link in my sig line. FWIW, I have never paid more than 30 for a workshop manual and I do have a collection.

The driveshaft from your 80 should work. The driveshafts for all trans 79-82 was the same. In 83 1/2-85 M/T ones the only difference is the flange size which is larger.
Pedals are a good question. I have only done the Fb swaps but I would believe that any of them should work 79-85.
Regarding the FB M/T you either have to notch the tunnel about 2.5 inches towards the rear or find a later 80 tailshaft housing and swap them over. Cannot be done with the earlier ones. (there is a write up on this)
You have choices on the flywheel.
You either have to use the 79-82 stock one with the appropriate smaller 215MM clutch set up.
Or you can use the counterweight off the A/T and install a larger 225 MM lightened steel flywheel and run the larger clutch.
Of course you will need to get a pilot bearing and seal for the eccentric shaft.
The transmission mount off the A/T will work but I recommend to get a new one because the rubber deteriorates.
You will need to get a M/T crossmember though. I can't remember if it needs to be the earlier 80-83 one or the 84-85?
Don't forget to get the throw out fork for the transmission.
Also get the clutch master, slave, hardline and hose for the 80 model.
Need the shifter for the transmission
If you are able to get the 80 style tailshaft housing then you can get the appropriate shifter trim and boot to take the place of the A/T trim.

If you notch the tunnel you will still be able to use the Sa M/T shifter trim and boot but will have to modify slightly on the boot to give it enough flex.

Tony,

I answered all of these questions in my post.
You have a 1980 model car, is that correct?
You want to put a 1984 Manual transmission in your 1980 Automatic transmission car, is that correct?

I'm so confused. I give up. I probably wouldn't be able to handle this job anyway. I didn't think it would cost so much money and take so much time. I just wanted to rip out the auto and drop in a man for 125$. I must have been dreaming. thanks for clearing up any confusion that i had.
