1979 Rx7 Muffler

I have a housinger (header) with 2 and 1/2 inch pipe... i bought a flowmaster for it, and its realllly loud.... anyone know a cheap muffler, that will make this thing more quiet but still sound good and that will hold up to the high temp of the exhaust of a rotary?? Also, will these things backfire no matter what?? Thanks everyone. K.C.

add a cherry bomb with the other mufflers should quite it down and take care of some of the backfiring

ok, wouldnt cherry bombs make it louder?? and thanks, i just meant the cheapest descent muffler.... i would appreciate it if someone could just tell me the best cheapest way to make this car sound like im not trying to wake the dead. Thanks so much. K.C.

No to cherry bomb that was bad advice imho beacuse they are glasspacks it wont last a month before it completely burns out on you! i had a cherry bomb on my se7en before i started the boost project.My old exhaust setup was loud and sounded kinda shitty Rb headers to cherrybomb to a monza muffler heres an old video listen to the shittyness.

Backfiring is caused primarily by exhaust leaks. My muffler recommendation is a Racing Beat universal unit. They're reasonably cheap, but very well made.

ok, so a no too the glasspacks.... a no to a flowmaster.... hmmm, Ok i have 2 1/2 inch pipe I dont want to go to one of the mufflers from racing beat that has the smaller pipe and flange... my exhaust is welded straight through, and has larger pipe, wouldnt i be losing flow by going to a muffler with stock size pipe thus bottlenecking my flow at the muffler, therefore losing horsepower?? plus they are nearly 300 dollars from racingbeat.... any other suggestions please.... looking for a better way out... thanks. K.C.

also, i have no exhaust leak, just had it all professionaly done, its a backfire straight from the muffler... and shoots fire from the exhaust tip when it backfires (the exhaust tip comes from the muffler) the muffler is a flowmaster, i know it is chambered but not sure how many chambers.... Im thinking its just because the muffler sucks for this car, even though flowmaster said it is for this car.... ok thanks... still looking for help

Have you messed with ur carb lately? you could you be running a lil on the rich side maybe? also with a nice free flowing exhuast its not uncommon to get a backfire occasionaly especialy once it warms up. my old setup spit flames alot until the shitty monza blew up. For the exhaust are u referring to the rotor shaped one? if so it should last long it is rb but it will probably be pretty loud since its a strait thru design. Also it wont help ur backfiring issue it would probably happen more offten not to sure tho. I bet it it would sound nice tho.

Its could very well be the way the carb is tuned, its newly rebuild and i tuned it before i had my exhaust on it, (straight housinger or header or wht not) and well i had all sorts of hell, it would never start cold, etc. Well after i got the exhaust on and brought it home, i put my fuel tank in it, and it started right up, and has everytime since, and im afraid to mess with the carb adjustment, that what i think it is, is the freeflowing exhaust, it only does it when i get the rpm high, and then let off.... and its definately come from the end of the pipe, and seems like its doign it just like, when you run straight headers on anything or there is an exhaust leak on anything, except the exhaust leak is actually where the exhaust ends.... lol

My suggestion would be a tanabe medallion. They take care of that pitchyness the rotary has, and deepens the tone quite a bit. Also the megan racing m-oedt is great it retains the stock looking dual tips and also rids the car of its pitchyness and quiets it down. Hope that helps.

I have the RB universal rotor shaped muffler. Headers to a straight pipe to the muffler. It is very loud and backfires. If you are looking to stop the backfiring I would go a different route. It is good quality however.

If you want to quet it down, it's going to need a pre-silencer and a decent muffler. Try a Borla XR-1 for a pre-silencer. If it needs more after that, then a Borla oval or the RB muffler for the rear. One of the main causes of backfiring is removing the cats and straight piping the exhaust. The main cat burns up the unburnt fuel.

well, would installing a presilencer help to make it not backfire?? Or will i have to get cats too? are the any specific cats i should use if i need them?? man, rotary, is a total different animal! Straight pipe to muffler on a sbc 350 never hurt nobody :-(

a loud rx7 never hurt any1 either

i high flow cat would take a few DBs out of it. or you can run 2 pre-silencers like trochoid said. OR turbo turbo makes then quieter and makes more HP woot +1 for turbo

here is what i found, i need 2 1/2 inlet and outlet, would i be better off getting the 12" or 16" long one? and is this the muffler that will work good as a presilencer? thanks. K.C.

if your not boosting it a turbo cherry bomb or an old red glasspack work perfectly, I've had one on my seven with a flowmaster for about 4 years now. they stop the backfiring and make a hell of alot quiter

Bear in mind that the rotor-shaped one is significantly smaller than the oval version.

Im sorry but i must beg to differ i also used a cherry bomb on my seven and it was crap imo and it is a fact that glasspack mufflers just cant take the heat of a rotary. ne one else care to chime in on this glasspack subject?

Rotary Engineering used to sell glasspacks that held up to rotaries pretty well. I've used them before. They sound great, too. On the other hand, if you buy a cheap glasspack, then you get a cheap glasspack.

before i spend 200 dollars on something i need something that for sure will quietin it down, and help with the back fires.... anyone have any links to the glass packs that work good on our cars? Would this work good as said before??

also just how loud can these things be and pass inspection? It will pass in every way except maybe its to loud....

Before you spend a bunch of money on a Borla, you should take a look at the pictures of the one I got:

Get a Racing Beat universal muffler and universal presilencer. The two together are a little over $200, and I guarantee you'll be happier with that combination, and it'll never wear out (I've heard stories of XR-1s not lasting very long on rotaries).

And your choice of muffler is not going to significantly change the amount of backfiring your car does. Exhaust leaks and a poor tune cause backfires. A restrictive, chambered muffler will reduce the amount of flames that actually make it out, but even then it'll still be backfiring inside the system.

14" for the pre-silencer. If you go Borla, try Wickied Nickys on eBay.

I had an old rotary Engineering pre-silencer, yes it's fiberglass and they do burn up. When I cut mine open the top 1/2 of the glass was gone. They are made of a much heavier steel than any of the non-rotary units.
