where in indiana do you live? in Bloomington there is a rotary specialist called JandHracing. go to JandHracing.com. for a good exhaust got to racingbeat.com or talk to JandH and they'll know what you should get. the rotary engine burns oil naturally i think. but if your oil seals are brittle you could have a problem, like need for a rebuild. dont get skirts. $5,000 on performance parts will get a lot out of that car i bet. tune up comes first.

1: I dunno. It doesn't really matter to me.

2: Racing beat, located at www.racingbeat.com

3: The motor will burn about a quart of oil every ~1000-1500 miles or so. This is normal, and you should only be concerned if it burns a lot of oil, or none at all.

4: I'd fix the rust before you cover it up. It will only creep up on you in the end.

5: You will never get your money out of a used car. Never. Any money spent might as well be thrown down a hole, never to be seen again. A 1st gen with 5 grand invested could be quite the machine indeed, but the only return on that investment will be the enjoyment of driving such a car. To me, that's enough, but you have to make that call yourself.

6: So long as the car hasn't been abused, the motors in the 1st generation cars are known to last well into the 200k range. Change the oil frequently and never overheat it, and you'll be fine.

7: First and foremost, if you're looking for horepower increases, get a free-flowing exhaust. There is no better investment than that for a rotary engine.

8: That's a big can of worms, but personally, I use Castrol 20w50 in the summer months, and a good quality 5w30 in the cold season. Some here use synthetic, but I don't really think it's necessary and Mazda doesn't recommend it. If you are willing to pay the added cost for synthetic, there is a case to be made that it offers better protection. I doubt that it would be harmful, at any rate.

Good luck, and have fun with your new Savanna RX-7. I have a '79 myself, and I love it. Here's a suggestion for you, take a look at the SCCA and Solo II autoslalom in your area. It's a pile of fun, and more addictive than crack.

the 7 is a car that in my opinion was built for drifting....for true drifting.....the need for enormous amounts of hp is not necessary....and this car comes with just almost enuff.....for a 1st gen u have a few options:

1) aftermarket carb, intake manifold, exhaust header and free flowing exhaust line - between 150 - 165 hp

2) DO THE ABOVE and street port - 180 - 200 hp

3) Do All the above and put in a blow thru turbo setup - anywhere from 250 - 500 hp (depending on how much boost u put)

4) Do step 1 or 2 only and upgrade ur suspension to the max and brakes and go drifting or autox or sumtin

lastly....the more stronger ur car is the more u can push it to (better way of saying abuse) and you also have to baby it....take good car of it and it'll last u a long while and give u a lot of joy!

Good Luck,
Gufran

PS: being young doesn't matter....i have an 83 gsl, an 86 gxl (which needs a new motor) and im planning on getting a tracker to make it a pimpmobile plus i got college to pay for....get a good job and u'll accomplish everything
