15 Miles to the Gallon...

Well, I figure out that my car is doing 15 miles to the gallon. Now my car is fully stock and I was wondering what could be wrong? is this mile per gallon normal for a 20 year old car?

When I start my car it smokes sometime big for a minute or two. What could that mean? I was wondering of learning how to tweak my carb or what ever it is to make it less smokey and better miles for the gallon. Any advice or tip would be welcome.

hell yea it is! i get that with the turbo setup, could be the carb or could be low compression in the motor. get a tester and see. if anything it doesnt hurt to get the carb rebuilt and replace the usual suspects in a tune-up.

I average 18 - 20 while driving like the cops are chasing me.... Hit the tuneup items, check for good exhaust flow, upgrade your ignition system, and make sure your brakes aren't dragging.

I do about half city half highway and I get about 25 on a stock 82 motor. Not trying to sound like the local news during a gas price story, but check you tire pressure, air filter, and remove anything from your car you don't need, books, cloths, whatever.

when i saw your car start up at the bbq i could tel the oil seals are going. your compression might be a little low. also, clogged cats, clogged air filter, needing an oil change will all reduce your gas mileage. In my car I get 16.8 both city and freeway. I figure i get about 18 freeway and 12 city. My car is hardly stock you might need a good tune up that might help. I have a stock 12a K&N I'll sell you. let me know...

My oil control rings were leaking pretty badly. I used 1/2 a bottle of Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer and haven't had an issue since. Might be worth a shot.

To: Zyrano, This is City Driving and about 20mins freeway. I normaly like sometime to redline it to clear some carbon and drive fast with it but beside that I normaly drive it semi-normal.

To: Hyper4mance2k, I need to get a compression tester to see if my motor is losing compression or not but $30 dollars on a compression tester is alot for me just to trow in like that.

To: DriftFB. Yea I need to clean up those buckets since I have more junk that who knows what. I Carry my tools as well with me along with my spare tire.

To: Kentetsu, I am going to upgrade my ignition system just waiting for my board to get here. I already have my 2nd Gen Leading Coil Pack and just need to check the brakes sometime this upcoming weekend. I am going to also buy new sparkplug wires, spark plugs and change the air filter if possible.

To FB II, yea I should get that damn compression tester to see if I am losing compression. I been wanting to do that for some time now but $30.00 is something is hard to come by sometimes for a tool.

See if you can borrow a compression tester from a friend, or see if there is a local rent-all place that has one...

I should be getting something like that, lets see after I get a few work done to the car. Hopefully I am not losing compression or the engine which is my biggest worry being that is my daily driver to work.

My 12a would get about 16 city when it was stockport with RB exhaust, mikuni carb, and msd ignition. That was with fairly civilized driving, shifting around 3500

I found I get about 20 on the highway, maybe 21 when I keep my windows closed and the sunroof on. Takes some of the fun out of it though...

Do you guys let yours car sit while you warm them up, or do you drive while the choke is pulled. That might be part of where the gas is going if everything else checks out okay. I also only get around 15 mpg, I have mechanical secondaries and like to punch it alot, not to sure how much that really takes away from the gas mileage though.

I let my car Warm up until the choke kick back or if I am in a rush I will let it warm up for 2mins and that is while reving the car from time to time to get that heat going then I push the choke in. Beside that, I drive it alot on the freeway with the windows open and the sun roof open. Now that is getting raining and cold I will be driving it with them close.

To: melikeRX-7,
keep the secnodaries closed
What do you mean by that?

Latinheat, you shouldn't be getting such gas mileage. When mine was 'MOSTLY' stock (except for a streetport), I was getting nearly 23-25 on average.
Now, with all my mods, I average more around 17, mostly city, but with some freeway.

What do I do to keep up my mileage? Drive it! I drive sane around most of the town, but I open it up frequently (especially under bridges ).
As for letting it warm up, I warm it up (using the throttle, as I have no choke) until the needle hits the first line and the oil pressure equalizes.

Do a FULL tuneup, including filters, and make sure you don't have any leaks (vacuum or otherwise!). That's all I can think of to bring your mileage 'up.'

Oh, also, I drive with the windows open ALL THE TIME, unless I'll be on the freeway. Or racing. Those are the ONLY times I shut my windows. EVER.

Must be nice... we have a season called "winter" in Canada... makes it REALLY hard to keep your windows open in the winter...

We have winter here too. Not quite as STRONG of winter, but it exists. I also drive with the windows down when I visit Michigan (occasionally in the winter).

I just LOVE the cold! And the heat! Temperature doesn't really affect me. That and I have a really nice leather jacket
