NY 13B trans onto 81 12A

Im normally a FC guy but im considering picking up a 81 rx7 from a friend for $500 to DD.

It has 117k, rear disc/LSD. New tires and brakes. Got some rot, I dont care. Its been sitting for 1 year because he blew the clutch. He took the trans, clutch, flywheel off and lost it.

I have a S4 n/a trans laying around. Is this what i need to make it drivable again?

S4 trans/ FB tail section
s4 starter
s4 slave
s4 crossmember
12A clutch??
79-82 flywheel right?

Any input would be great. I would like to be driving a rotary again asap. Thanks, Nick

As long as that FB tail section has the shifter tower assembly on there you're good to go. However you will need an FB trans mount and trans cross member. The FC trans cross members won't really work without modding.

If you are going to be using stock flywheel and clutch then yeah make sure its the 215mm 1982 and earlier stuff so the engine stays balanced.

Starter and slave cylinder doesn't really matter, any FB or NA FC parts will work equally well.

If you can post a picture of the engine, I can confirm what year clutch will match as long as it's still got the factory rotating assembly. I'd say 99% it'll take a 79-82 flywheel but there is a difference in flywheels. They have the same offset balance weight, but actual weight is 30 pounds for 79-80 and 23 pounds for 81-82. Take a picture of the rear plate specifically where the heater core fitting is. Look under the oil filter pedestal and you'll see it. You're looking for either a threaded in fitting which has a large bolt head of around 24mm or a pressed it tube. If it turns out to be long with a T-shaped fitting, you've got an 83-85 engine in there which would take a different flywheel.

Look here for info on flywheels. http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/flywheel.htm

Thanks for the heads up Jeff20B. One big problem is he doesnt have the tranny anymore and i need the tailshaft off the 12a tranny to put my s4 n/a tranny in. Since it could take forever to find a tranny im not going to bother. I wanted to bang this out in a weekend and make it driveable but it wont happen. Ugh guess i'll keep on trucking my truck....

I'll check and see if he somehow has the 83-85 12A. If so that helps a lot.
