13b Swap ?
I've been thinking about a 13b swap into my '82 and am pondering the idea to actually do the swap or rebuild/enhance the 12a I currently posess.
What did you guys pay initally for the 13b?
Did you buy the components piece by piece or all at once?
Or did you purchace the complete car for the swap?
How many just dropped the 13b in w/o any modifications of any kind?

FB+FC=F-ME
The amount of work is directly affected by what 13B you are talking about.
If you run a 70's style 4-port 13B,itll bolt up with just a 1st gen front cover and an SE oilpan.The intake can just be a typical Nikki carb and manifold(either 13B or 12A w/adaptor).I did this before going TII and it was very cheap and simple......

To install an SE or later EFI 13B,youll have to wire up for the fuel injection and convert the fuel system to high pressure.Quite a bit more involved,but also more to gain.EFI is easier to drive,especially in the winter.Theres plenty of room for upgrades since its all metered air type EFI,and you can go turbo much easier.
This type of swap can reach the thousands of dollors,whereas the carb'd 13B can be done for hundreds.

I understand It can cost big $$$$ but I'm talking a 13b or 13bt both being EFI and what it costs initally; just the engine tranny and possibly turbo and exhaust. I'm talking just to get started.

So were talking strictly an FC motor?
Cause there are 2 other 13Bs before the 2nd gen 86 model,one of which is EFI (84-85 GSL-SE)
An 86-91 13B can be had for pennies from a local wrecker like PickNPull.I scored my entire 87 TII drivetrain for only 400 bucks.That was for the entire longblock,tranny,all the wiring and the ECU.Best part was that it actually ran well and even pushed me to a couple mid 13 second runs.It eventually blew a water seal,the donor car was in the yard because it had overheated and mildly warped the housings beforehand.Thats gonna be the tough part if you choose a wrecking yard engine,finding one thats not trash.If you pull one from a car thats been in an accident,then its likely to run.
You can also score J-spec 13B engines,but theyre all gonna be 13BT since there were no non-turbo 2nd gens in Japan.The problem there is that you will only get the engine and trans.The rest of the underhood stuff will have to be scrounged up from wrecking yards or private parties.This greatly complicates things and there were some minor,but important changes made over the 6 year run.
Getting everything from one car,in one trip,is the best way to go.And getting it from a "you pull it" type yard is usually the cheapest way, too.

How about trading a non-titled '95 Eagle Talon for the engine/ECU/harness? Had a guy offer me a healthy 13b out of a second gen for my Talon (which was free to me).
Thank you for your help Steve, you've given me a serious plan of attack to do this.
I'm just looking for the entire system to do a complete rebuild & turn into a turbo motor, I'm thinking this is a great deal but my mother is second guessing the idea, Damn parents.

Trust me,if your gonna do an FC engine swap with intentions of turbocharging,do it right the first time and just do a TII swap.
Its the same amount of work physically,and the TII engine and ECU comes factory prepared for boosting.Already tuned,ready for 180-200HP with 250HP right around the corner with a few bolt-ons.
Why bother with a 140HP N/A engine?Theres no point in trying to retune and cobble together a turbo engine when Mazda has already done it for you.Plus the popularity of the TII engine typically makes it more common than the N/A engines.
Trades are almost never a bargain for both parties,youll have to make the call on the Talon.I will say this,youll need quite a few components to make the factory ECU run.If the guy says its all there,you better know whats what,or youll be tracking down bits and pieces for a long time,trying to get all the puzzle pieces.Thats why its better to procure a complete donor car,you can pillage everything at once and be assured that its all compatible.
If you dont have a factory service manual yet,get one.Its got all the components and their functions laid out in simple English....plus wiring diagrams,flow charts and trouble shooting.I consider it a "must have" tool for anyone doing a TII swap,especially if they are not fully versed on the FC's engine control systems.......
