to 13b or not to 13b?
i have a chance to get a second gen 13b engine, not sure of the exact year or milage, but it is suposidly in good condtion. Its 400$ but it does not come with a tranny, so im just wondering if the tranny from a 12a would match up to it?

If its a non-turbo the tranny will work fine. Just need notch the front crossmember from the 12A and use the 12A front cover. You will also need an oil pan from a GSL-SE.

You need the oil pan because the 2nd gen pan doesn't clear the steering rod on a 1st gen, and obviously the 12A pan won't fit. As for the tranny, the reason BlastinSideways says as long as the engine isn't a turbo is because a TII engine will turn an FB tranny into a very big paperweight in no time flat. Chances are you would blow it up the first time you tried to launch.

FB+FC=F-ME
Youll need the GSL-SE front cover to keep the 4 tube FC oil metering pump.FC engine have 4 oil injection nozzles.
Then youll need the GSL-SE oilpan to mate to the front cover and to clear the 1st gen's X-member.
You are now mounted up....12A tranny will work fine so long as its in healthy condition.Non turbo 2nd gen trannies are basically the same unit.
86-88 EFI isnt too complicated, its very similar to the GSL-SE injection and there are few surprises when converting it into the 1st gen chassis.
If its an 89-92 13B,then youve got other issues to deal with,if you wanna retain the factory 2nd gen EFI,the electric oil metering pump being the primary hurdle.....

Screw the 2nd gen EFI system. IMO, the system mazda used on these cars is ****. Its too problem prone to really work with it. Your better off using a standalone system or converting the engine to carb, which is easier than getting the damn EFI to work properly in an FB. There are only 4 wires from the FC ECU that you have to hook up, but you have to know what they do to get things to work right.
When I first put the S4 6 port in my 82, it was still EFI. It took me 2 months to get the wiring right because there aren't any good resources online for the conversion, then when I finally got the engine running, there were problems with it. It ran so bad that I actually thought the engine had bad compression on the rear rotor. It wouldn't idle below 1200rpm and it would cycle slowly between 1500 and 2500rpm. I asked many people about the problem, but no one could figure out the problem. I probably would have replaced every sensor and FI piece on that car before I found the problem. I just said screw it and went carb.
