Arrow 13b Engine Managment Controller / ECU

For all the guys out there that have done, or have heard about doing engine swaps: Does anyone out there make a fuel injection EMC or ECU for the 13b (or 12a... any rotary really?) I had the privilage of being buddies with a 'team' that put together a 13b FI engine together to run stationary as a school project, they built their own controller (Air/fuel/timing) from scratch. I don't have the technical expertise to do such.

I just watched a friend of mine drop a set of FI compatable intake runners on his 350 Olds. rocket, hook up his $300 (He said el-cheapo) engine managment device turn the key and drive away. I'm jealous.

I really DO NOT want to hear about "Hey, you just get a FC\TII\JDM\ETC... ECU, and... some of the stuff works, and you can get like a mod chip and totally change your fuel maps sometimes!" and so on... For every one success story I've read about recycling stock ECUs, i've read 10 where things were seriously broken and troubleshooting became voodoo.

On doing a little more research The Google provided a link to this forum (which, oddly enough didn't show up when I did a search, go figure...) that had a MegaSquirt FAQ embeded. It seems that the MegaSquirt system can be a complete ECU replacement, with the apropriate daughter-cards and add-ons stuck onto it... All that's neccesary is a doner profile from a running-in-place ECU. Sounds like that might be the best way to go.

Chances are that both of the ECUs you mentioned were MegaSquirts. You can build them from scratch or buy one that's pre-built, but either way it requires a working knowledge of electronics and engine management. And no matter what you get, you'll have to tune it. It might run on someone else's maps, but every engine is different, so your success will vary.

You haven't said what engine this is for, either. If it's a previously carbed engine, converting to EFI can be tricky due to the lack of injector bungs in the intermediate plate. The easiest way would be to buy a Racing Beat Holley manifold and put a square-bore EFI throttle body on that, but that's pricey.

Well, my curiocity mostly is derrived from the fact that in my neck of the woods a totalled RX-8 goes for around 2,500. (Already setup for EFI, existing profiles including forced induction setups, etc, etc, etc.)

My lowly 12a needs a rebuild (probably.) and I've already rewired the ignition systems and apparently screwed up the carbeurator. A Holley setup will set me back at least $200 (Used, on a good day.) And won't really give me any additional power unless I get a new exhaust manifold, rip out the smog system and even at that, I'll be lucky to hit 200hp at the wheel (VERY lucky, most dyno slips I've seen from N/A 12a are around 175 at the tippy-top.)

... Anyway, I'm starting to look at it on the merits of 'upgrading' to a rotary that has more viable (cheap...) solutions in the parts bin. I don't want to crack my block open and find out that the housings are scored all to hell with nothing on-hand to toss back in.

As far as ECUs go, now that I'm aware of the forum for such, I'm sure that I can have my questions appropriately direct to there. I just feel that there's an inherent flaw with using a stock ECU with a bunch of the inputs dead-headed... That is all.
