12a's few questions

are the earlier 12a's without the oil thmeropellet in the front ecc. shaft? could some one explain this to me thanks i took apart an early 80's 12a and it didnt have any thermopellet behind the 19mm bolt. and the corner seals did not have inserts. so these are "solid"corner seals? did these come stock from mazda? can i add a thermopellet to the system? thank you for your time

ok so i just looked at a "solid corner seal"and it looks like i have a regular corner seal that uses plugs. so someone rebuilt me without the plugs? how important are they?

The thermo pellet was intoduced with the 2nd gens. Many engines I've torn down don't have the corner seal plugs in all of the corner seals. They seem to wear away and disappear. Due to that, I use solid corner seals on rebuilds and save the extra cost of the plugs.

As I stated, thermo pellets were introduced with the 2nd gen engine. All prior engines did not have them. There is a mod for the thermo pellet that many of the rebuilders use to eliminate the possibility of the pellet failing and causing oil starvation to the e-shaft. You can use the later e-shaft in your SE engine if you choose to, but I would do the oil pellet mod.

Very sharp looking Se be proud and take good care of it.

Yep,ditch the oil pellet and get the bypass plug if you build a 2nd gen engine.....its cheap insurance.Ive never run the pellet on any of the 2nd gen engines Ive done.

The pellet reduced cold running fuel consumption a fair bit,(someting like 10-15%)....but not enough to risk your engine or a fresh rebuild. Just drive normally when cold, and the engine will come up to temp quickly, with or without the pellet.
