12a vs 13b power potential for csp auto-x car
One of my autocross friends and I ran into the same problem. Here's the deal. Any complete engine trans updated backdated from your series of car(as long as the classing has all the cars models in the same class). This means any engine from the 79-85 as long as you swap the entire engine/trans into the car. I ran into this problem running a honda civic, the DX and HF models were classed in FSP, while the SI was classed in CSP. If these were all classed the same you could swap the SI engine into the HF and still stay in FSP, but not so. The friend of mine ported his 13B, and is now in Mod. Pretty much you can do all the bolt ons you want, light flywheel, intake, exhaust, carbs, EFI, ign, and more, but you can't touch the engine itself.
I am preparing my RX-3 for CSP and will be retaining the 12A... even though I can update the RX-3 to 13B because it is on the same line as the RX-7
I'll be able to make it rev faster, it is marginally lighter, in a car where cutting weight up front is important.
My personal take on the subject is, Do whatever you want, build the car as you want to, go run CSP and have FUN..
As Cletus was saying, unless you win nationals, who cares...
I'll be honest, in my CSP car i have up-dated my shity old drums for 81-85 GSL discs, and I went with solid Aluminum engine mounts which are about 5mm shorter than factory. Oh and I am using the 9 pound lighter Aluminum S4 alternator instead of the factory cast iron version.
there, I am illegal..
those are such, huge advantages..
But seriously, if i complete against any one of you and get lucky enough to reel in a better time than you, are you going to be a big baby and go tell on me?
The SCCA needs to grow-up. I wish SCCA's Solo rules would adopt a point system much like NASA's time trials classifications.

ok, maybe i'll stick with the 12a, just do as much to it as i can. i looked at the it rules, and i think i'll stick to the csp rules, as i do plan on using this car on the street, and plan on keeping the interior (just getting lighter seats). not sure if i will go with sterling carb or holley setup yet. also debating on getting rb holley intake manifold and mounting the nikki on it. i like the simplicity of it over the stock intake manifold. mikey d, where did you get the coilovers? i was planning on going with the rb springs, but if these are the better option, i'll go that route.

Good stuff.
The 1st gen is more of a good momentum car. Power would be helpful, but just good driving and carrying speed well through corners will probably help you more.
When I ran my 1st gen in ES, I was illegal too. No one said anything about it (probably because on the Victoracers I had problems keeping fuel in my carb, my stock carb needed work). If you start winning nationals though, it is really sad how many people do become cry babies and file protests and have competitors cars torn down. I wouldn't worry about that happening though.
Important thing to remember about autox is it is purely for your entertainment. You probably aren't going to win any money doing it, you will spend quite a bit though, so just do whatever and have fun.

yeah, i run my wrx in street mod right now, and have a blast doing it, but would like to run some regional stuff and maybe nationals eventually, and i don't think the wrx would be that good at it. i don't expect to ever be a champion in a 20 yr old car, but would like to at least be able to trophy eventually. its definitely the most fun you can have for $20. i know a few people who have been protested at nationals, thats why i want to make sure i am legal, as i don't want to have to cover the teardown costs if i am found to be illegal
Be careful. That sounds like how I got started. I used to run my audi (we won't get into how illegal that one was, had to do something to keep up with those pesky IS 300s before they reclassed them), so I got the FB for autox to not tear up the expensive street car, had carb problems, so I started shopping for GSL-SEs so I could have fuel injection, and when I couldn't find one reasonably, I ended up with an FD.
Damn sport is a money pit.
And I still suck! Stupid Z06s.....
