12a swap what the heck is this

When I took the header off, the exhaust hole on my old engine was much bigger than my replacement. I was disapointed because I thought that I was going to lose some power because my old engine was street ported... but then I looked at the holes closely. I said... that is the cleanest street port... perfectly round... He must have been a pro.... But then I realized that my new engine had these things that look like inserts in the holes. It looks like if I pull those inserts out... it would be the same size...

Should these things come out?

If so do they just pull out?

Guessing my old engine wasn't SP right...

Please help.

Also... the FSM says to remove the starter... but it doesn't look like its connected to the motor? do I need to?

If you want to tear your engine down, then you can remove the exhaust sleeves, otherwise they stay. A streetport refers to intake, not exhaust porting.

Not sure what you are asking about the starter, it bolts to the tranny and the top bolt goes through the starter, tranny and engine.

Thanks!!! So I will remove the starter because of that top bolt running through to the engine, and sorry about the porting question... I thought it meant exhaust proting...

The intake size is the same between the 2 engines so the seller lied about the street porting as well... anyhow I guess if anything I should see an increase in performance then since my new engine has 1/3rd the milage.

thanks again... you have helped me before...

Those sleves were allways missing off of the engine I was running. What would have been the side effect of not having those sleves?

While the intake ports may look the same size externally, have you stuck your finger in there and felt them for differences between the 2 engines? Missing exhaust sleeves generally give better, noisier flow.

Felt around inside and it feels the same in both engines. Guess you never know who to trust....

A port job would have at a minumum, smoothed runners. The PO may have been refering to the exhaust ports.

2200$ on ebay After hearing soo much about people getting them for 500$ 800$... I really feel bad... about 3 months ago and on the ebay description it said it was street ported and rebuilt 40K ago... said mechanical secondaries too... and now that I know what that means I realized It wasn't done either... I knew what the RB header and exhaust looked like and the Holly red fuel pump so those I saw right away.

Reason why I'm swapping is because a coolant seal failed. I'll take it apart and try to rebuild it for fun and as a spare and hopefully learn much more about the wankel. Up until I bought it I never drove one just loved the look. After 3 short months and now 3 weeks without her... I'm like an adict. I have a 94 q45 with 280hp a 96 Maxima... and I still enjoy driving the Rx7 better than both.

Anyway I guess you live and learn... and being that I'm a pastor in training... I have to repent for some of the thoughts I'm having.
