12a questions

- of the 2 coils which is leading and which is trailing ?

- I have gas dripping out of my exhaust pipe, where it joins
the manifold. Is this just the unburnt gas being pushed out ?

- after trying for a while to start the engine the battery and the - cable
are hot what might cause this ?

- it seems to be doing nothing but just cranking over could this be timing
or the carb?

- I have bought new spark plugs (almost $6 each), new distributor cap
had the battery and alternator checked both good, still nothing what could
be my problem ?

- and sometimes the carb will start to fill with gas what is happening here lol ?
(gas will collect in the bigger 2 holes)

- one more question I took my battery and had it charged and checked
(it was good) but it runs down in like 10 - 15 mins how do check to see why
this is happening ?

first of all, WELCOME ...

as you stand facing the left fender, the Trailing (T) should be on your left and the Lead (L) should be on your right ... as long as a previous owner didn't do something to change that.

sounds very odd that you'd have gasoline "dripping" out of your exhaust pipe, especially that close to the manifold.

check your terminals, wires and connections ... heat is to be expected, but unless something got shorted or there is faulty wire or inappropriate gauge, it "shouldn't" be THAT bad ...

you may have flooded the engine. you also may want to check the carbie ...

You have flooded the engine by all accounts, remove the plugs, turn the engine over a few times to evacuate the fuel, dry the plugs (brake cleaner does this great), replace and she should be good.

Damn $6 plugs, I get Nippon Denso 25s fromAutozone at about $3. They are the correct plug for the 7, or the NGKs but nothing else.

The distributor cap will identify the L (leading), and T (trailing) wires.

Hot cables are an issue, are you ground wires in good shape, sounds like a resistance problem, clean the terminals well also.

Basics are fuel, air and spark, if you're flooding it sounds like a spark issue, test for spark at the plugs.

they were ngk pulgs, i just got riped off i guess lol, I checked and yes im getting spark, should i just keep drying off the plugs, and truning the engine over with no plugs to dry it out, then putting them back in and trying till it starts ? or is there something else i should do ? and how long to crank to be sure the gas is all out ?

incapacitate the pump and remove the plugs

turn the engine over for a minute or two with the plugs OUT!

reinstall dry/new plugs, then ...

crank ... it should start if flooding is the only problem

depends how much ...

if it's really bad (and that's how it sounds to me) then you'll likely just run the battery down ... cranking will get progressively slower until it stops altogether.

Liquid gas doesn't burn, it needs to be atomised with air at 14.1 ratio so it wont start if flooded no matter if you've got spark.

What strength is your spark? just because you have a spark doesn't mean it is a strong one.

Before you start tearing into the carb establish you have a strong enough spark, this will require the correct equipment, so you may need to have a local 7 guy or mechanic look at the car.

You have a short, check all your wiring, especially the ground wires, follow from battery to body to starter, make sure they are clean and the wires are in good shape, that is draining your power, probably reducing your spark also.

You wires and battery shouldn't get more than warm.

does the starter ground on the tranny frame or should the negative wire go directly to it ?

The positive cable bolts to the outboard (driver's side), terminal (nut) on the starter, the negative cable bolts to the long starter bolt, on the engine side of that bolt.

well thats the way i have it, beacuse the starter is getting hot does that most likely mean the short is somewhere from the starter to the battery

the starter itself getting hot is not as great a concern to me as other things. the starter wasn't designed to be used for LONG periods of time and if you've flooded it and keep on cranking, it is bound to get hot. just the way i see it ...
