12A pics; modified carb too!

Thought I'd post this after being reminded what I did to the thing...

Here's the engine dangling from our "hoist"... notice the intake manifold from an RX-2 on it. That manifold is actually port matched on the primaries; the ports are also a lot smoother internally than on the RX-7 ones.

This is the most visible changes to the carb... the top airhorn bit is from an RX-2 also; the primary butterflies are maybe half again as much area as on the '7 carbs. Also visible is the lack of a vacuum secondary diaphragm on the back, and the lack of a lot of unnecessecary bracketry and bellcranks.

Custom fabbed acclerator pump linkage; it's about an inch longer than the stock one. Yes, I did the full barrage of carb mods that Sterling described in his writeup; mechanical secondaries, embiggened accelerator pump, lengthened linkage... yeah.

Unfortunately, this is all on a stock port 12A but... still should gain me a fair bit of power over stock. What d'ye all think?

You're lucky to have RX-2 parts. I also have RX-2 parts that I'd like to mod like you did.

I've got a 13b intake manifold from the '70's laying in my basement if anyone wants it for a small price. I have no need for it, but I don't have the carb that goes with it.

Isn't it great? My dad had an RX-2 before I was around, and still has all the parts for two engines for it; hell, one of the engines is even still all put together.

But then again, due to the racing program, we have 4 RX-7 12As laying around... one of which is slated to go in *my* car. Oh, and a fifth that's actually *in* the race car.

It's gratifying to be able to sit with a pile of carbs and a caliper, take a couple apart, and measure to see which bits are better than others.

I'll soon know what you mean (I have five Nikkis ranging from RX-2 to FB here).

Well... from what I've seen pokign around some more today, the RX-2 float bowl bit is better too. And those little brass things on top of the airhorn part are actually for the OMP (according to my dad's RX-2 shop manual).

I'm still using the RX-7 butterflies and stuff, but that's just because the ones on the RX-2 are rusty. Oh, and the fact that I modified the linkage on the butterflies and don't want to have to do it again...

Neat stuff. Note how thin the carb spacer is.

actually, the spacers are not thin. Say its starts as .5 inches then gets thinner to appx .25 inches. I think the rear of the manifold is higher than the front. they made it that way in order for the carb to sit flat on the manifold.

Actually, that spacer looks pretty darn thin to me. Maybe I should go take pics of that in specific; I *KNOW* the back end of the manifold is higher than the front.

Took the carb out yesterday; decided that I liked the RX-2 float bowl setup better too. Plus it has bigger jets overall. And even less emissions crap to plug!

Ok, I'll really need to consider using my RX-2 carb now.

*chuckle* Hey, thanks... I couldn't have done it without your writeup. It makes absolute sense what you're talking about afterwards, but to get it to that point... well.

The one piece one isn't actually so hard... so long as you're bored and have a grinder.
