12A Ignition Upgrade
12A Ignition Upgrade
I recently installed a Mallory 6A (cheaper than MSD & full digital circuit) with a pair of Accel Super Stock coils. I also put in a set of new motor mounts, just OEM type. Man, I wish I had done this much sooner. I have much easier starting, less choke time necessary, smoother idle, much better throttle response, way more power and a hell of a lot better gas mileage. I've been driving it hard, so I don't have enough miles and fills in to get a solid average yet, but I'd bet at least a 30% increase. It used to smell way gassy during warm up, now it's just at first and goes away a lot quicker. I went on a long trip, raced most of the way, had the air conditioning on quite a bit and I still got over 20mph. Before, I bet it would have been about 15-16. I also don't need to downshift as much as I used to in order to accelerate or pull a hill. My old ignitors used to start cutting out at high RPMs, especially when it's hot out. This whole project cost me about $160 and I bought the parts on eBay, with a few wiring accessories from Schucks and Home Depot.
I did not go with the direct fire method on the primaries. I want my car to remain pretty stock looking becuase it's in fairly nice shape. I do wish the dist. caps would last longer though. Hey, they used to sell all copper ones, now everything is friggin' aluminum. CRAP. Anyone know where I can get the old school type?
I'm going to run out this next tank and that should give me a better idea of my normal driving mileage.
So, what have some of you done and what are your results?

Wow my friend. Congrats on the new found ignition upgrade. Oh and let me be the first to welcome you to the forums.
I am going to do that to my '79 with an '83 12A with my FD's old twin turbos (non Seq.) attached for boost.
If you claim more MPG and it is hitting close to 30mpg than I say right on! I have had 25-27 Highway/MPG with my '79 before the oilpan dumped its load of oil on the Highway.
Congrats and keep up the good work.

Demersus,
Do you have any recent information on this subject? I am trying to decide between MSD and the digital Malory 6 ignition. Are you still having as good of results with your mileage and performance as when you first installed it?
Thanks,
Darrell
