12A fuel tank baffle help

12A fuel tank baffle help

ok i did some reasearch and found nothing on 12A to 13BTII swaps, and if there is a swap they dont talk about the baffle in the fuel tanks, i would like to know who has built there own baffle in there tanks, and if they have pics of it to give me a clue as to how i sould go buy building this baffle, all so if i use the surge tank idea correct me if im wrong but i would make a tube for the fuel to be stored in and have my factory fuel pump fill it, it should consist of the stock fuel pump line going out of the fuel pump and around 2" in side the surge tank and have the new EFI fuel pump get its gas from the botem of the surge tank, thust leaving the extra air that might be get in the fuel system remain on the top portion of the surge tank, the only problem i see here is wont the surge tank get full of air at one poin or an other. \
i hope this is understanable, as theres something wrong with my eyes this week end and reading is kind of hard, same with typing. any ways thanks in advace

im talking about doing something like this

let me know what you guys think of this and any ideas you think might help i seen some surge tank for sale at http://www.tweakit.net/shop/product_...roducts_id=126 witch gave me the idea this might be the way its built, thanks

The surge tank is filled by the factory pump. A line from the bottom of the surge tank goes to the efi pump. The return line from the regulator returns to the surge tank. A vent/return line from the top of the surge tank goes back to the return line connection on the main fuel tank. Lots of connections, but the system does work well. A baffled tank would be a cleaner solution IMO. Go to your local auto wreckers, and ask to look at some fuel tanks. They'll often have a stack of them set aside prior to crushing the vehicle. You could probably get a 'scrap' one for next to nothing, and pop the baffle cup out of it. Use caution working on these fuel system components!

Well, just to argue, the blue line is low pressure, not 'just flow', everywhere except between the tank and low pressure pump. If you can find an SE tank, I has a sump cup that the pickup and return lines sit in. It is not very large. If you are not in a big hurry, I am working modding a 1st gen tank to take a 2nd gen intank efi pump, along with the cup. I need another week to finish it up, then another week of testing. If successful, I will do a full write up.

I've installed a 2nd gen pump asymbly by way of cutting out the original flange and welding the 2nd gen flange in place. I have no pictures of this, I actually followed another members directions... I'm sure he'll chime in if he sees the thread.

For the baffel, I just mimicked (sp) the one in the 2nd gen. Basiclly mine is an oval shaped "cup" spot welded to the bottom of the tank that surrounds the pump.

On a side note, you shouldn't limit yourself...in this case... to Mazda parts. Knowing what I know now the next time (very soon) I need to convert a 12a tank for FI I will just use the most common FI tank flange (most likly civic) so I don't have to do so much junk yard hunting. The only requirement for this is it has to be metal and a walboro pump avilable for it. Most, all that I've check so far, FI systems use the same sized lines and hoses so there's not much worry there.

Heres my only (poor) pictures of the FC pump into 1st gen tank swap.Its quite simple provided you are a decent/good welder and are VERY CAREFUL to get the tank clean and vapor free before any welding,cutting or grinding.The final product is silent and reliable....a perfect factory copy.
Measure twice,cut once and there is very little to go wrong.The whole thing fits like it belongs in there.Just butcher up an FC tank for the parts and youll see what I mean....
