12a front pulley install with engine in the car

I broke my front main pulley and I'm now having to replace it. I was able to get the broken one off, following instruction from other threads and keeping the clutch pedal depressed. Now I'm installing the new one, how can I torque it down while keeping the clutch pedal depressed? At what point do I know the torrington bearing is safely in place and I can put the car in gear to torque down the front bolt?
Thanks

You don't need to remove the eccentric shaft hub to replace the pulley. Just to clarify, did you remove the eccentric shaft hub center bolt?

If you did remove the eccentric shaft hub, you'll need to lock the flywheel and check the end play. Not sure this can be done with the engine in that car.

Yes, I removed the bolt. This is what I removed:

I'm confused, is this not all one piece? All four bolts are removed (one snapped) and there's that large black rivet looking thing holding it together. In other threads I've read it seems like this can be done with the engine in the car, talking about holding the clutch down with a 2x4 or something. No one mentions anything about reinstalling.

I was able to get it torqued down. I had an AC pulley laying around and put that on, was able to get a good grip on it with a pair of vice grips to hold the engine.

It is not all one piece. In your case, the pulley has an aluminum rivet in between the 9 and 12 o'clock position in your picture. A chisel would have removed the head and the pulley just comes off the hub.

Lets just hope the Torrington bearing didn't drop after removing the hub bolt. You'll find out real fast of you start hearing engine noise.

you can check if the bearing dropped with a very easy measurement
