12a FB: Air Pump Sounds Like Crap!
Hey guys,
I have been doin a bit of searching regarding this topic and trying to decide what to do with my exhaust.....
My 82 GS has a bit of a hacked together exhaust system. It has an RB streetport header (rectangular flange) that has a collector bolted to it that goes to two cats in line with eachother. Then out to a muffler.
The air pump outlet hooks up to a steel tube (Maybe 3/8" ID!)....
My issue is not the exhaust, but rather the air pump.... it sounds like crap. I took the belt off to spin it by hand, spins free with no bearing play.. good sign. But still awful sounding. At anything above idle it makes a loud clicking/scraping noise.
I have been wanting to get a full exhaust now (RB etc) for a while, but can't pull the trigger, it would probably cost me $300 to get the system up to Canada. I will figure it out eventually.
I really want to rip out the air pump and go to a double alt pulley. I would block off the air line going to the cats.
Does this sound reasonable? From what I have read cats without the air pump can clog... My thinking is my cats seem fine, and the 3/8" line feeding both of them air can't really do much.
OR, I waste ~$100 on a reman. air pump if I can find one locally.
The noise is really starting to bug me, make the car sound awful.

Go ahead and ditch it and block the line, you'll be fine. Mostly what clogs the cats in these cars is time. That and running too rich. You don't need a double pulley but it's not a bad idea if you drive the car hard. Save up for the exhaust, it's one of the best mods for these cars.
