DOWNPIPE...... hmmmm

I was hoping for some insight on my downpipe. I kinda just pieced something together to get it running with parts I had laying around. It bends at a 90* right out the turbo with a 2.25" pipe than another 90* bend with 2" I think into my 2.25" exhaust (all free flowing mufflers... no cat(s)).

I'm I really loosing much with my $#itty downpipe?

I was thinking of putting together a 2.25" downpipe with mandrel bends (compression bends now) to connect into my exhaust.

Any input on this?

3" exhaust FTW, anything less is going to be a restriction and cuase you to choke the hellout of that turbo. The exhaust housing is already too small for a rotary so let that thing breath.

Mine has 2.5 on it and it seems pretty good. I mean these turbos aren't really that big, 2.5 should do it right?

Well, I've got an intermediate magnaflow muffler
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...rsview=sku&Ns=
located about under the passanger seat, I'm thinking I will run a 3" downpipe to it and leaving my 2.25" behind the intermediate muffler to my tail muffler.... similar to this:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
What you guys think? Enough flow?

It is a tiny turbo. 2.5" should work fine, though 3" will spool it even faster. Personally, I'd not choke it down to 2.25".

OK...

Starting to piece together a 3" system in my head. I will need 2 x 90* bends (or a 180* bend cut and re-welded) at the downpipe, a 45* at the axle, a 90* on top of the axle, a 45* after the axle, some union connectors for easy mating for welding and a bunch of straight pipe. I have a Magnaflow muffler now and really dont want to buy another one http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/d...rtnumber=14813

The core on this is 2.5" and I was thinking of using a reducer at the muffler.. ideas? Gah...

180* bend for downpipe $24.95
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

90* bend 6" radius - one cut in half on each side of axle $24.99
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

90* bend 3" radius for over the axle $27.99
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

2 x 4' straight piece of pipe $30
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Bunch of unions ~$20

Total = $128 + handling..... DAMNIT

ORRRRR.. just found this http://store.racing-solutions.org/3on4rasuexbu.html

would almost cut cost in half

The next step

As $$ hasn't started growing on trees yet... my exhaust rebuild will need to wait until the 1st of the month at least.

Ugh... My wife is a little dissappointed in me... LOL

This "budget" turbo build has almost doubled the original "estimate"... But, damn its fun to drive. It pulls like a sun-of-a

I figure I only have FOUR areas for UPGRADE:

1: Exhaust -> upgrading to 3" from turbo back... will swap in my GSL rear end when I swap exhaust.

2: Timing -> currently locked at 10* Leading / 0* Trailing.. This seems to be the "safe" tune but curious if more HP could be found SAFELY with some more timing

3: Ignition -> Still running stock ignition with aftermarket plug wires... I'm thinking aftermarket coils would be a benifit

4: Spark plugs -> I'm currently using NGK BR8EQ-14 all around... I'm a little curious if different spark plugs would be better now that I'm running 10 psi

Any INPUT on this? Especially plug choice.

b9s on the plugs or b9es. They are motorcycle plugs. Gap them down tight 15-20 thousandths. Gslse-addicts tt bix would help you out as well. Leave your timing be. DOnt listen to others who who have the extra 20hp and walk the line of danger. If you play with the timing ask yourself before you do, can i afford a rebuild if so do it.

With the plugs you are gonna need a thin wall 13/16ths socket

With a 10 degree split and premium gas, you could probably get away with another degree or two of timing, but I'd leave it alone if the idea of a rebuild scares you. You could try reducing the split if you want.

So.. is it normal for the carb to load up after idling for a while? Or is it pooling of fuel in the turbo?

When the car idles for several minutes and I give it gas it goes VERY rich (pegs my wideband), chokes and coughs and blows black smoke for 1-2 sec. Besides that, runs good.

Actually, taking off in 1st gear tends to over richen the mixture. It will peg out my wideband and cough and spit. I wonder if the accelerator pump squirt is just a bit to much.

guess the pooling may be affecting my 1st gear pulls. Guess I will need to rev up and spool up the turbo a bit for launches at stoplights
