1/4 mile time for 85 gs?

all the wed sites i have looked at say that the 12a should get about 80 in the 1/4, but i can only seem to get mine up to 70. is there anyone else out there with a gs that gets 80 or so, and does anyone have any suggestions on why mine would go so slow? it just makes me sad that a "sports car" can only hit 70 in the 1/4, just doenst seem right.

Your performance is way, way down.

It could you just need a good service, in particular fuel filter and spark plugs may be a problem. Specific problem diagnosts needs more infomation, how does it idle, does it blow smoke, does it start easy when cold, what do the spark plugs look like?

If the mileage on the engine is around 150 000 plus it could be just tired after 17 years and need a rebuiuld.

I can see my car hitting 80 in the 1/4 though I've never really tried...Just from accelerating on on-ramps and watching the odo type thing...

PS - Its an 85 GSL

hmmm i ran 14.7 at 102 i have a good street port built with all new housing and rotors. I'm not sure what else they had done to the motor but the man who built it said it was set up to turn 9k it has ceramic seals in it. I has a racing beat header straight piped out, rejetted nicki that has a few mods, double alt pulley, rebuilt 5 speed tranny, centerfource clutch and a lightend fly wheel. on the strip i shift at 8k on the road at 6k 0-80 is damn fast but after that it takes a few to wine up.

yeah ,that sounds about right, my car use to run the same bone stock. when ever you get your motor rebuilt
i commend to get your engine ported with a mild port if you use the car alot for everyday driving.i think street port and bridge port brakes alot for everyday driving.if you don't use your alot a street or bridge porting is perfect, but also it depends who does your engine too.

Lets get back to the question!!

Snakes99 has lost stock performance. He does not need advice on the benefits of streetporting.

What should he look at and do to get stock perfprmance back?

If the engine is totally worn then porting is an option at rebuilding at great total cost. $$$$. Remember on another recent thread someone asked for advice on the 12a and ended up getting a good second hand engine for $450.

do you ever leave a smoke screan behind shifting from 1st to second, or sec to third? Do you notice alot of backfiring when deaceleration? ex[lain how the ride feels, what rpm are you taking out at? although in a rotary you should always do a roll start(not app in a drag scene though) it's hell on the rotars.. maybe with more info I could find something out? or maybe one of the gods here will know the answer (20b that's my next step) ha!

oh yeah.. do you hit a flat spot.. the gas pushed all the way, and the engine just hover and sound really weird untill you let up and get back on it, or shift gears?

alright, the car idles good, usually about 800-1000 when its warm, it doesnt blow smoke, just a little when i start it, it has the new mazda apex seals put in about 2 years ago, it has 122,000 on it, never seen salt, its always been started about once or twice a month in winter, so its been taken care of its whole life, it just doesnt seem to have the pick up anymore, it does have a low popping sound when i let deaceleration but i belive that is from the different exhaust i have on there. if there is any other info you need just let me know and i will let you know as best as i can.

thanks for the help.

I know, Steve is just being a smart @$$. I know it fits, but it was anything but bolt on!

The spanking was just a friendly way of letting him know he was being a smart guy.

Besides, since I have GSL-SE (13B), when I finish my Cosmo Turbo conversion, I too will say when asked:

THEM:
"What do you have in there? That thing is Fast!"

ME:
"Just a stock 13B, not even ported.."
