1/2 bridge vs Judge Ito's SP
1/2 bridge vs Judge Ito's SP
I simply cant decide whether I want to go with judge ito's agressive street port or a 1/2 bridge 1/2 street port using RB bridge and street templates for my 12a. I want to produce as much power as I can with out having to go with all the high RPM mods and no turbo. I am very curious as to what kind of power band a 1/2 bridge has, I know the peak will be moved up, but how much further up? also would a RB race exhuast template be a good match for this? I would appreciate any ones 1/2 bridge experiances and opinions on ito's SP.
Never had an sp, went straight to a 1/2 bp. I know I'm mising out on the top end because my carb isn't big enough and I didn't do the 8k+ rpm engine mods that a bp really needs. I did find out going to the rotary meet in the rain a week ago that there is an extra kick in the powerband near 8k. I was in 3rd gear hitting it and just before 8k the rear tires broke loose on the wet pavement, (245/50/15 Radial TAs). Suprised the **** out of me.
If you want streetability, go with Ito's sp. If you don't care about lowend torque, don't plan on driving around town much, like to drive in the 4k+ range all the time and are willing to spend an extra 5-700+ for the high rpm mods, go with the bp.
Funny thing is, IanS was following me, and keeping with me with his sp motor, until the higher rpms. Off the line and at low rpms, he would probably have gotten better starts than I could without the rain.
When it comes to aggressive street porting, Ito is 'the man'.

I don't recommend a bp, 1/2 or full, for a DD. Stock porting for the primary and bp the secondarys doesn't make any sense. Now, if you have a 4 barrel Nikki set up so it cuts off the bp seconday port runners until the secondarys in the carb open, you should be able to regain the lowend driveability that I don't have with the 2 barrel Mikuni.
The Nikki will take some modding, you might try PMing Carl or Sterling and see what they think about that. It won't work with the Holley carbs because the intakes are cut from RB so all 4 runners are exposed to each other under the carb. I think it may have something to do with needing more clearance so the larger butterflys can open fully. Don't know or sure.
To build a bp engine the right way to make use of the higher rpm and hp curve, it adds nearly $1000 in parts and machining to a standard rebuild. Then you get to replace the entire exhaust system so it doesn't get choked to death, and the RB sp system doesn't really flow enough for a bp. I made my exhaust from scratch with 3" mandrel bends and 2, 3" straight though Magnaflows. It's loud.
In the long run, for cost effectiveness and driveability, I'd go with Ito's aggressive sp, then add nitrous for the happy times.

I never had a 1/2 bridge but I do have a 12a w/ Ito's SP's. Most who have driven the car cant believe that its a SP and sounds "brapy" like a bridge port but the low end power is sweet (very drive friendly) and high end feels insane. I think going with Ito ports is the only way to go. BTW I'm running SP w/ Weber 45dcoe and RB header, strait pipe to RB muffler.

i got a 1/2 b.p. and 1/2 s.p. in my 12a with a holley 650 msd boxes coils and wires r.b. intake a full exhaust. the car is awesome!!!!!.........If u live above 6k rpms. other than that if this is your daily its not a great choice min is for weekends and the strip and I have a shot of spray that i will be putting soon to help me off the line and for more fun. but it ALL depends on how you will be using your car. you can ask everyone but its your driving preference and type of driving that matter. just my 2 pennies.-Erik

Ito's agressive street port is rediculosly perfect. the side seal is only half supported. it'll idle smooth but only draw about 14 psiof vaccume. it'll rip up high. on a 12a you should be able to get over 200whp IDA carbed... and the hlaf bridge might net you 10-20whp more

One of these days I would like to also get my hands on the old RE 36 mm DCD with a 13B intake mani as an option for engine I need to build for the REPU.
I'd consider a 48 dcoe too if you run across one, have the mani for that.

Yea he's still in Joyzee! lol... Your best bet is to PM him but you gotta join the site in order to do that. You'll be very happy with your gains with Judge Ito's ports!
I definately like what I hear about Ito's ports... and since I have a couple cores in my basement Im thinking that maybe I should get ahold of some templates.
Does anyone know how hard it is to get his templates from him, or how long it would take to get them?
Id love to pick some up, but Im sorta leery to do this through PMs on nopistons.com
Is there anywhere else I could get a set of these? I think I need something a little heftier than the extend port templates offered elsewhere.
