[85 GSL-SE] power steering whine
Hi. Over the past week or so, my GSL-SE power steering has begun to whine. It constantly whines, I can hear it and feel it even at idle, then when I turn the wheel it gets louder. The fluid level is fine, the belt is good, is my power steering pump toasted??? Thanks.

Sounds liek the pump is taking a ****,Does your rack leak at all?
When you turn,do you get like dry spots..like the P/S goes out once in a while?

no leaks. when I turn it at slow speeds it feels normal, no dry spots, however at speeds, like going around high speed entrance/exit circles at like 40+, it requires much more effort. That might be the speed sensitive steering though, but it feels heavier then usual. Also, the noise seems to go away for a few minutes, then come back, randomly. thanks

Welcome to my (up until recent) world.
To fix this problem:
1) Get some 14m wrenches, an adjustable wrench, and a flashlight.
2) Cut the belt
3) take out all the bolts on the power steering pump.
4) remove the pump from the car, Place it carefully in a waste management utility.
5) on the box, loop the send and return line.
6) place the waste management utility on the street side, to be confiscated by appropriate authorities.
7) Enjoy the benefits, a quicker revving engine, and NO MORE WHINE! (isnt that embarassing!!?)

had the same problem and didi the same thing. '85 GSL (except my pump is sitting in a box in my back shed) i had another '85 GSL that had the same problem like 10 years ago and i eventually did the same thing to it. i replaced the high pressure hose- natta. i tried some of the power steering fluid that was also a stop leak formula......after a few days of driving, symptoms returned. i bought the rebuild kit from mazda and overhauled it but no luck. just a lot of frustration. all that time taking that piece of **** out and apart for nothing. still whined. it stoppped when i put my 13B streetport in it--which had the power steering delete option

Ok so I gather you are explaining the way to remove the power steering on the car. It sounds like a plan, until I can gather enough money together to get another unit. How much does this effect steering effort??? Thanks
