Talking *thinking about buying a parts car*

I found this junkyard about 70 miles from where i live. I found 2 rx's there. A 1980 and a 1987 gs. I am thinking about buying the 1980 for parts i need for my '82.

The stats:

1980
Red, ext. and int.
5 speed
12a
ac
aftermarket glass moonroof
straight body, no dents
dual exhaust
factory mags

The salavage guy was asking $350, but i think i can bring it home for $300 or $325.

I need close to $200 worth of parts so i thought i might as well buy the whole thing incase i need any other parts.

What do you think, would you buy it?

(ps clear title)

Buy it - you can sell the moon roof alone for $100-$200 bucks

oops! it's 'aftermarket'. Nevermind.

But you'll still find having a parts car a lovely thing. I've an '83 that I cannibalize - saves a lot of driving out to the wreckers

I believe from my 80 parts car , that there isnt too much that would be beneficial to you . The interiors are different , the body , the lights , the bolt ons on the engine , the dizzy are all different. the only things that may be beneficial are the block, the tranny, and the rearend /driveshaft. Just from personal experience its would be a waste.

peace

you'll still get all kinds of interior switches, trim pieces, heater fans, etc.

Man I want to go junkyard shopping. My friend is looking to sell his Olds Acheiva for a 1st gen and I thought it would be great to find a one in good condition for him so he can join the club and learn the ways of the jedi-rotary.

Don't buy it, you can probably find one sitting in someones yard cheaper than that, and an FB would be more use to you. They're out there, I know a bunch of people that have picked up Fb's for under $200.

Not much off a '80 that will fit on the '82. For $300 I would find a GSL and get the 3rd member and power windows.
What you cant use off a '80. Body parts, exhaust, fuel tank, distributor(pain), tail lights, Front suspension, transmission and etc. You will be stuck getting rid of parts you cant' use.
Keep looking for '81 or later.

the interior is different altogether, the switches, etc don't match, the exterior is different (q/panels, etc), the drivetrain is different (rear end, driveshaft, tranny), the engine stuff is different (emissions, oil cooler, radiator, etc), and overall, the only thing that would be of use would be the rear end (if you did the swap), the engine, and the windows/windsheild...

Unless you want to modify almost every single part you take off to fit on your car.... Then it'd be a great parts car...

That's strange, considering the fact that a fender on a 1981 bolts up fine to my car with NO MOD at all. The car says on the door 9 month of 1980 or something like that, so maybe it's considered a 1981. Either way, the insrument cluster, switches, etc are the same. The only two things that are different are the exterior mirrors and the sunroof. And the motor, i have a 13B swap in mine.

then it's probably an '81

and '80 has the flat, square bumpers on the front, and the '81 has the round bumpers... easiest way to tell...

Yup. I just bought my first parts car for my 82 GSL. Price $20 plus a $6 lunch for my friend who lent me his time and trailer. Finding out the parts car I just purchased is the same year and model....almost priceless Parts car is an 82 GSL also with almost everything still there except quite a bit of the interior is gone. The motor is only missing the a carb, the rats nest...no biggy, the dizzy and the fan clutch. The only thing about the motor is that it has been sitting and last time I looked at it before moving it it had water in the intake and dizzy holes so the interior of it, if rebuildable, will have to be refinished. All suspension and drivetrain is still there, all the rims are still there, etc. All in all, definately worth more than the price...at least to me.

I also know of another one that is complete with supposed clutch problems though there was quite a bit of oil on the outside of the engine. It is sitting on some property that is for sale and the property owner kicked out his last renter for owing too much money. The last renter left the car and the owner would sell it to me for $100 but no title (and probably wouldn't sign a bill of sale either) so I am hands off of it right now. I'm going to try and track down the owner of the car and screw the property owner if they guy lets me have it for $100 or less. Any ideas how to track ownership of a vehicle in MO?
