Unhappy $80 later and it still hesitates!

I just spent $80 on plugs, cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, wires. It mabey runs a little better (the fuel filter sure had a lot of rust in it!), but it still hesitates when i first apply the throttle, and sometimes hesitates when i am accelerating. What else could it be? I also noticed that someone before me had shoved something in the small hole in my air cleaner (i think shutter valve?), what would happen if I remove it?

Thanks,
Matt

Did you fix the accelerator pump yet? If the pump isn't working then that's definately the cause of your hesitation problem.

You need to work on the carb. Get a manual and dig right in.It's alot more scary thinking about doing it then it really is, once you get started.
Just make sure that you have a clean area to work and don't drop anything down the intake. "Go for it "

sounds like the accelerator pump. Carb probably needs to be rebuilt. Take your time, do it right, get it very clean. Lay it all out on a table covered in butcher paper, so you can make notes on where things go (not my idea, but a good one).
The $80 you spent on everything was money well spent. You needed to do all of that anyway.

Fine

Ok... when I have time, I will rebuild it. Where do I get a kit and how much do they cost? Just curious, but how much would a new carb run me?

Thanks,
Matt

When I rebuilt my carb ~5yrs ago it was about 25 bucks If I remember right. Came with all the gaskets and some. I got it at Big wheel or now checker. I don't know how much a new carb would run you but I'm sure it would be wayyy to much.

The thousand dollar quote is right on, I made the mistake of taking my RX to the dealer. They wanted to replace my carb @ , you guessed it, one thousand dollars!
It was a stuck float needle. Live and learn.

Go For It

I just rebuilt my carb last month and I think the kit ran me about $30. I recommend buying a crap load of carb cleaner (I think I went through about 6 cans of the stuff). Also, make sure you write down the locations of all the ports (they should be numbered). Finally...be really careful about the float ball check valves or whatevery they're called. They're these little ***** that love to fall out when you unscrew a port and be lost forever. One of mine was glued down in there too so I had to fight to get it out. My 83 had two of them, though I don't know if that's universal. Other than that, a digital camera works great for taking pictures of the way wiring and stuff is connected.
