$5000 Project Question

Well, I've decided to put a S5 TII engine in my GSL, I've already picked up the motor and have been mapping out money and what I need to complete the project.

After seeing what I'm doing, a friend is looking to do the same. He plans on taking out a loan for $5k, and putting in a TII in his GSL-SE. Do you think this is enough money to do the swap, including the cost of the engine? I was thinking yes, and possibly enough to even include a Haltech E6X. What are your thoughts?

Bryan

If a shop is doing it, I kind of doubt it. He could pretty easily do it on his own, I'm sure.

I'll be guiding him through the swap. It won't be taken to a shop.
And do your "Yes" answers include the Haltech?

Yep I think that it could be done. There is a guy locally that did the complete swap for around 3k. So yes 5k should do it.

If you're helping and getting a break on labor, that should be more than enough I would think.

A loan to do engine work on a 20+ year old car is a major financial mistake. Help him out by telling him to either save up or just enjoy the car as it is.

^ you might be right but the payment is only going to be around $150.

but then again i used a credit card buying parts for my civic and got out of control real quick, and it took me awhile to pay that **** off. now that i look back on it i wish i hadnt done it that way.

Some people care more about performance and originality more than how much a car is worth. What about the people who drop 40-50k + in a restore to a 66 GTO Judge, or a 71 'Cuda Convertable? Do you have the same thoughts about those people? They're classic american muscle cars. He's doing a much lower budget upgrade to a classic Japanese sports car, as am I.

I'm sure they do it with money they have...not money they will have in the future. And people wonder why they go into debt.

And they are far more rare, far more expensive, and have a pretty good chance of recouping the money spent on the restoration.

Let's say that my FB I bought with the ugly maroon interior, horrible black paint job, and small amounts of rust, get's a wonderful restoration. Let's say I strip the entire interior, fix all the small interior rust, prime it, paint it... Let's say I re-do the entire interior so it's nicer than new... Let's say I fix every tiny thing that's wrong with the car... It's gonna cost me about $5000.

You think I'll be able to sell my FB for $5000? I sure as **** don't. Now, you spend $40k restoring a 'Cuda Convertible, I guarandamntee ya, you'll get that $40k back... and then some:

You're comparing apples and hand grenades, my friend.

What mwatson184 said is the whole point. It's not about spending money on something that doesn't appreciate, it's about spending money that you don't have on something with no return. If you have the disposable income, use it, it keeps the economy moving. Debt spending drags the economy and the spender down in the long run.
